Hello Fedinauts, hello @soapbox. The function to view posts that are written in advance seems to be anavailable. Any pointers for me, what I might do wrong? I am using the desktop-version (WIN + tested with FireFox/LibreWolf/Chrome) of the app.

I can see the button (at the top of the start-page as well in the dialog to write a new post), but nothing happens when clicking it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@meowski Maybe that’s why #Soapbox has been designed this way, but it really should be a setting that can be toggled off and on.

How come in #Soapbox, mentions from users I’ve muted show up in the Notifications pane?

I'm going to need people who have no fucking clue how Venn diagrams work to please refrain from making them. The first image is an atrocity shared by a friend on FB (and that friend is not responsible for the abomination, and is a good person so I'm not posting this back on FB).

The second image is a proper Venn Diagram (one of several possibilities, I think, but the most common one).

The shitshow, the omnishambles, the clusterfuck...

  • How is Clockwork Orange a combination of 1984 and Brave new World?
  • How is Logan's Run a combination of Fahrenheit 451 and Handmaid's tale?
  • How in green blazes is Gattaca a combination of clockwork orange, Soylent Green, and Brave New World?
  • Et Goddamn Cetera

NONE of the overlaps make any sense. Whoever made this just threw scary book and movie titles in spaces. They should not even be informed of the existence of the proper 4-category Venn. They have proven themselves deeply unworthy.

I am guyjantic and I approve this unhinged rant about an inconsequential matter.

#rant #venndiagram #DataIsUgly #BadGraph #ForShame #Petty #soapbox

"The State Of America" (yes, they capitalized "of")

with a bad attempt at a 4-category Venn diagram: four circles arranged in a square-type pattern so they achieve 4-way overlap in the center. However, this leaves the upper-left and lower-right with no 2-category overlap, as well as the upper-right and lower-left. An entire set of 3-category overlaps is also absent from this symmetrical but awful attempt.

As if to highlight the utter dumbassedness of this graphic, the center is labeled "You Are Here," a message I can't take at all seriously, given the semantic/conceptual chaos of everything else in the picture.

All spaces have been filled in with the titles of dystopian books or movies: 1984, Clockwork Orange, Brazil, Gattaca, Lord of the Flies, etc. As noted in the post, no thought at all has been given to the way a Venn diagram works; that is, all but four of these should represent combinations of 2 or 3 others. Nope, just scattered about like dumping silverware in the drawer without any concern about forks and teaspoons, knives and soup spoons, etc. jumbling in individual niches.

It's a horror, really. This is a proper Venn diagram with 4 categories (though I believe there are others): four ellipses arranged in a somewhat herringbone/chevron pattern. This is a demonstration, so the spaces have numbers in them only, not words (and the numbers seem to be from a demonstration I'm not aware of; they're a bit random-seeming, but that's not important). All possible 2-way and 3-way overlaps are accounted for, as well as the 4-way overlap and the four individual single categories. In other words, this one is good.

#Soapbox is one of my favorite apps, but I’m fearful of using it too much, since @alex has apparently moved on, and I’ve no idea who’s behind teci.world

@bomkatt Machiavelli was brilliant. The Prince has an “ends justify the means”, self-interest-above-all rep that’s completely unjustified. The actual book is a bunch of advice about being an effective ruler & putting the good of the country above your own preferences. It was just shocking because it dispensed with notions of valuing honor & idealism in favor of a pragmatic “what achieves the greatest good” approach. Machiavellian is a compliment of the highest order. ❤️

I'm not posting this in agreement. Or not full agreement, anyway. It's been posted and shared on my feed in facebook. As a general principle: Absolutely. Your opinion about my experience is not as valid as my experience... usually.

The problem is that I'm a social scientist. That word "opinion" is carrying a lot of weight. If someone's ideas of what a non-lived experience is like are based on supposition, best guesses, and their own experience, then the graphic is valid: lived experience is much better.

However, if an "opinion" about my lived experience comes from the reported lived experiences from relatively representative thousand or so people, the opinion is probably more valid, for certain purposes/contexts.

"Validity" always has a context or target. No matter how much amazing research I have about a certain issue, my knowledge is never as good for an individual as that individual's lived experience. However, if "valid" means "generalizably true across lots of individuals," then one person's experience will never be as valid as a reasonable (lots of weight on that word) summation of many others' experiences. Another detail is whether one's interpretation of one's experiences (especially interpretation of causality) is necessarily more valid than interpretations by others who haven't lived the experience.

If you're feeling uncomfortable about this analysis, consider a parent whose child develops autism. The parent is fully convinced their kid's age 2 vaccinations were the cause. That parent has definitely had an experience, which included seeing their kid vaccinated, then seeing autism symptoms emerge. None of that means the parent's interpretation of that experience is accurate. No, the vaccines did not cause the autism, but try telling the parent that. They might tell you that they lived the experience so their interpretation is right.

And they're still wrong. Yes, the experiences they had are theirs and valid and valuable. That doesn't mean nobody else can have a more valid opinion about their experience--specifically, a more valid opinion about the causes of their child's autism.

This dynamic applies in many areas of our world: are soldiers' views of American foreign policy always more valid than non-soldiers" views? The soldiers lived the foreign policy experience, after all. Are a patient's views of their disease/diagnosis/disorder etc. always more valid than the views of medical professionals? The patient lives the experience, right?

In plenty of domains and applications one's lived experience should not be questioned by those who didn't live it. I'd say this should be the default in living our lives (hence my lack of concern about this meme even though I don't quite agree with it). However, the vague use of terms in messages like this might contribute to a belief, as Asimov said, that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge" (not Sagan; thanks, @courtcan) fueled by the insistence that one's interpretations of one's experiences are superior to all other interpretations.
