Looks like I'll be coming out for Siggraph in LA this year. Where should I not stay? Koreatown is looking like the closest for a modest budget.

# Advent of , day 11: Lazy continuation lines

Today's post is a warning. Markdown tries to be very smart with newlines and you need to be careful. The rule of thumb is to always have an empty line after quotes and lists.

---

Next year I will travel around the world through Canada, the USA and Japan, a month per city. Do you know any cool places and events to visit? Conferences like , local meetups like game jams, music, hiking spots...

I'm also looking for travel buddies :)

a series of from is relatively straight forward in , but im interested in the opposite. I.e. taking a raster image and extracting a series of vertices from it. I dont want to use a to do it, i want to do it by hand programmatically. Anyone got some good material on how i can develop such an ? Need it for a project i want to do.

Seems I'm one of the few who remembers #BeyondTheMindsEye (or Into the Fourth Dimension for the #Siggraph people). I was mesmerized by it when it came out and it influenced me doing #3D (and I still listen to the soundtrack to this day).

My personal quite worn Beyond The Mind's Eye VHS and CD soundtrack by Jan Hammer from 1992.

Live from Vancouver: our SIGGRAPH mini report.

• Generative VFX workflow (Stable Diffusion → Nuke)
• “Creative” no-code engine: procedural worlds, physics, AI text-to-scene, one-click publishing

If you’re exploring AI as a production co-pilot in VFX or gamedev, this one’s for you.

All slides from this year’s Advances In Real-Time Rendering In Game course at #SIGGRAPH are now online… some really good stuff in there you shouldn’t miss:

I met Andrew Glassner at #SIGGRAPH back in the early 1990s, when I was still a #ComputerGraphics academic researcher. I remember him as a superb communicator. His recent book is a non-#CG one: "Deep Learning: A Visual Approach" (2021). This book contains no equations at all, only simple diagrams and illustrations. A tour de force of visual communication, that. Go, CG!

I like #AI as a computation tool but, as my friends on MathsTodon know, I genuinely detest the common way #DL is now being taught to #ComputerScience and #DataScience undies—no maths, just API call-fest. Consequently, new CS and DS grads entering #IT—who are fashioning themselves as "#AI experts", either due to profit motive or through sheer ignorance—lack the adequate mathematical and intuitive understanding of this rather "deep" subject. Andrew's new book will not remedy their maths shortcoming, of course, but it surely will give them a thorough, intuitive grasp of DL, IT's current "darling of the day".

Indeed, this book is so gentle that I dare say 8th graders could be taught DL, out of it. That is my ardent endorsement of this book.

Armed with this intuition, those youngsters with adequate background in undergraduate maths could move up to books like "#DeepLearning", Goodfellow (2016) and "Pattern Recognition and #MachineLearning", Bishop (2006).

Who’s planning to go to #siggraph Asia this year?

My first #siggraph was a lot of fun, exhausting, but fun. I do wish there was a concepts of realtime rendering talk before the advances talk to explain all the acronyms that are metioned in the advances talk.

Seen at #siggraph2025 Lumio 3D face scanner pretty cool stuff. I wasn't brave enough to stick my head into the scanner but it looks pretty futuristic. #siggraph

Lumio 3d staff - bald asian dude grimacing hilariously, pointing to the 3d scanned and printed rubber mask also with the same expression that he's wearing on his belly. OK this reads impossibly ridiculous, but it's true! To the right I included a bit of the 3d scanner - a polygonal spheroid with tens of thousands of bright white led lights meant to encase a person's head.At Siggraph 2025, the lumio 3d face scanner - a volunteer is putting their upper body into the face scanner - tens of thousands of points of bright white light in a polygonal spheroid meant to encase a person's head to scan it.

Overall, I enjoyed this #SIGGRAPH. Downtown Vancouver is much nicer than downtown LA (low bar, I know).

I felt like my whole schedule was BOFs, but spontaneous discussion can often lead to greater insights than a slide deck aimed at a wide audience.

There's a slight melancholy in that I go back to the grind on Monday, and it will be weeks or months or maybe next show until I can act on anything I learned here. But that's the nature of the beast.

Until next time... #SIGGRAPH2025

#SIGGRAPH day 4 - dawn of the final day.

My schedule is woefully light today, and most of the talks that I would like to see are after I have to leave for the airport. Fortunately, my flight is not affected by the impending strike.

I'm hoping the USD Migration Roundtable spills into a hallway track since it would be fascinating to hear other studios' journey into USD.

But first, pancakes.
