Our penultimate stop on our 2008 cruise was to Singapore which meant we had to make sure we took a trip that got us to visit the famous Raffles Hotel and try a Singapore Sling. Raffles - returned to its 1915 heyday look - was wonderful, as was the drink in the Long Bar, and the day in Singapore also had us visit Chinatown and a heritage museum there, then head to a pewter factory to make our own bowls after the Raffles visit, which made for some tipsy entertainment and lovely souvenirs to take home.

We're outside an impressive white building with a British colonial look looking slightly upwards to fit its entire façade into view. The building rises only three storeys and is wide with two wings on either side that angle outwards towards us in the courtyard area in front of the place. The lower floor has a glass overhang supported by iron poles and ornate brackets, all painted white. Beyond those are the arched entranceway and windows to the main lobby of the building but it's dark within and not possible to see inside. The two floor above, including the wings, are thick white columns and frames supporting windows of small, square-framed glass. Romanesque arches are central over every main window, with the windows on the first floor being wider than the ones on the top floor which are taller and more narrow. The name "Raffles Hotel" appears at the top of the building in front of a plain pediment. Giant, artificial, dark green wreaths decorated with red garlands and white baubles add colour to the front of the building and indicate that the Christmas season is here.
