How typical of corrupt GOP politicians! First lose at the ballot. Utahns voted FOR prop 4. Then try an endrun around it by rejecting the legally drawn up map from the independent commission. Then lose in state courts. Now, try to overturn it in federal court. Lying scumbags!

WASHINGTON — U.S. Reps. Burgess Owens and Celeste Maloy of Utah joined 11 local leaders in filing a federal lawsuit on Monday alleging that the state's court-ordered congressional map violates the U.S. Constitution.

The lawsuit names Utah Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson as the defendant. It seeks to prevent her, as the state's chief election officer, from implementing the new district map for the 2026 elections.

The GOP's ballot initiative will seek to repeal Prop 4, another ballot initiative which voters approved by a slim majority in 2018 after a signature-gathering effort led by the nonprofit group Better Boundaries.

The Better Boundaries initiative prohibited partisan gerrymandering, outlined requirements for redistricting and created an independent commission to recommend congressional maps every 10 years.

Plaintiffs, including the League of Women Voters of Utah and Mormon Women for Ethical Government, sued the state Legislature in 2020 after lawmakers removed or watered down the law's requirements.

After the Utah Supreme Court ruled in 2024 that the Legislature's changes to the Better Boundaries initiative was unconstitutional, 3rd District Judge Dianna Gibson said lawmakers had to redraw the state's congressional map under Prop 4 criteria.

Since nobody asked, here's our family's take-away on the #California #Propositions:

* #Prop2 - Yes. Why: some of our local K-12 schools need desperate repairs, we're for a state bond to help share the cost and invest in our education facilities.

* #Prop3 - Yes. Why: lots of progressive reasons, but especially after reading the "Argument Against" section (always read what the nut jobs think, it's very informative)

* #Prop4 - Yes. Why: we need to invest in climate change protections, especially after critical dam failures, wildfire risks, etc.

* #Prop5 - Yes. Why: torn on this, but we get frustrated when public benefit is hamstrung by minority votes that prefer NIMBYism. This prop allows majority votes for funding affordable housing, count us in.

* #Prop6 - Yes. Why: when our kids learned about involuntary servitude and serfdom/feudalism, it was tough to explain that some of those "terrible things" are still alive and well in our prison system.
