Book 34: “The Secret Commonwealth” by #PhilipPullman.

Re-read to prep for the final book. These 600+ pages are warranted, unlike 95% of the sci-fi/fantasy books I’ve read this year. The Books of Dust evolve and complicate the beloved world of His Dark Materials in many ways, but one of the most arresting is in the relationships between people and their daemons. It’s shocking, heart-breaking, and very human.

The setting sun casts everything in red as a train crosses a bridge, its smoke drifting above. The silhouette of a woman is in a window towards the rear, and in the near distance, a large mosque.

Thoughts on The Book of Dust now that the trilogy is over (no spoilers)

I figured out what upsets me about the Book of Dust overall. It doesn’t seem of a piece with His Dark Materials. It reads like Pullman unsuccessfully ret-conned key elements. If he had thought of those things earlier he would have integrated aspects into the original series. Instead (especially when you reread HDM) the misalignment in character and history is glaring.

His Dark Materials is just Rick & Morty without the jokes.

I am just beginning The Rose Field by #PhilipPullman - the final book in his two series that began with The Golden Compass. I am one chapter in and feeling hopeful and a twinge of potential heartbreak. Argh! (No spoilers!!! please)

“Then it started to rain, so she went inside and made some coffee and did what she had never done in her life: tried the newspaper crossword. “What a stupid exercise,” said her dæmon after five minutes. “Words belong in contexts, not pegged out like biological specimens.”

Book mail arrived today, and I have to give a huge shout out to Eagle Eye Books in Decatur for the Pantalaimon pin and all around excellent service!

Also, EEP. This is it. This is the last book in a series that I've loved for so many years. I'm having that weird really want to read it but don't want it to end feeling. 🤓

A copy of the book "The Rose Field: The Book of Dust Volume Three" by Philip Pullman. The cover features an illustration of a vast desert and blazing sky with an overall red, orange, and yellow tint. There are two camels with riders silhouetted in the foreground.
Also pictured is an enamel pin of the character Pantalaimon in his Pine Marten form that the book shop sent along with the book.

What a ride. And, honestly, it's great to have the same feeling of sadness when I finished reading years ago.
