It took more than two years this time, but we have another release of our toolbox for computational MRI. A lot of new functionality including real-time reconstruction, motion correction, posterior sampling, sequence design, etc.
.. and we moved to Codeberg.

The problem with MRI scans?

Almost everyone has an abnormal MRI, whether you’re looking at the shoulder or the spine (or anything else), making diagnosis difficult and resulting in lots of surgery of no benefit (and frequently making things worse.)

99% of adults over 40 have shoulder "abnormalities" on an #MRI, study finds”

The shoulder joint is the most complicated in the body because of its multiple degrees of freedom. But the problem of overdiagnosis is quite widespread throughout medicine.

arstechnica.com/health/2026/02

Text Shot: Up to a third of people worldwide have shoulder pain; it’s one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints. But medical imaging might not reveal the problem—in fact, it could even cloud it.

In a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine this week, 99 percent of adults over 40 were found to have at least one abnormality in a rotator cuff on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons in a shoulder joint that keeps the upper arm bone securely in the shoulder socket—and is often blamed for pain and other symptoms. The trouble is, the vast majority of people in the study had no shoulder problems.

So your shoulder MRI looks “abnormal”? Join the club. 😼

A quick scan here (as I'm very much swamped irl at the moment) suggests I might be preaching to the choir here but #Canada's recent tragedy at #TumblerRidge is bringing the anti-trans brigades in full force in other social media spaces, so a quick reminder:

The #DSM has so many conditions listed within it that I would be genuinely surprised if any human on the planet *couldn't* be diagnosed with something in it. Whilst DSM stands for the Diagnostic and Statistical Mental Disorders, IMO it is much more useful to consider it an accounting/coding resource for things that cannot be explained by objective medical tests such as blood labs, #MRI, #CT, #XRay, etc.

Many conditions in the DSM require access to medical care and/or #Rx #medications, something that requires a #diagnosis to exist.

An example: #ErectileDysfunction

Here is an excellent overview of the many possible causitive factors, but the description of the condition? It all starts in the DSM.

In the past years our team at #HUBerlin and #ChariteBerlin was able to recruit 451 adults (231 females) aged 18-64 years, with and without low-back pain.

Besides #kinematics, we assessed muscle strength, activation (#EMG) and morphology (#MRI) of the trunk.

Today we finally submitted our second manuscript and it is my pleasure to publicly share this unique dataset and the #rstats code used for analyses (doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17950007).

We sincerely hope that our commitment to #OpenScience and #FairData allows researchers worldwide to use this data and foster global research initiatives, collaborations and comparative studies on low-back pain, facilitating cross-cohort validation and a broader applicability of findings.

Note to future self: Don’t get MRIs on Fridays. You’ll get the radiologist’s results but not the doctor’s and will have to ponder the former without the context of the latter...all....weekend...long. 🫤

AI isn't just a buzzword in medical imaging; it's a tool for better patient access. 🩺

Chaundria Singleton discusses how AI in medical imaging is helping to speed up scan times. While some fear it might reduce work, it’s actually creating the capacity to put more patients on the schedule and reducing wait times. It’s a great example of how technology can support practitioners rather than replace them.

CD? Annan puhelimeni että saavat laitettua mun spotifyn? C-kasetti? Vinyyli? Muistitikku? Hyräilenkö itse siellä putkessa?

Back from the #MRI and that was certainly... an experience.
Felt like an overweight torpedo being loaded into the tube, but luckily I felt annoyed, not threatened or scared.
Especially the pressure from the side-padding was like "stop touching me!".
But manageable.
Still ... Worst techno party ever!

I'm honestly a bit done right now.

Findings illuminate how fat distribution—beyond BMI—ties to brain aging and cognitive risk, making the topic salient for mental health professionals monitoring neurocognitive health. Two patterns stand out: fat accumulation in the pancreas that can occur even when liver fat is not elevated, and “skinny fat” — excess fat relative to muscle in individuals who do not appear severely obese. This broadens risk considerations for therapists, social workers, and other mental health providers when discussing lifestyle factors and cognitive health with clients.

Article Title: The fat you can’t see could be shrinking your brain
