We’ve been in squircle jail before

I’m not using macOS 26 Tahoe yet – hopefully I’ll never have to; 🤞 the next version of macOS is less of a dumpster fire, and I’ll just skip Tahoe entirely.

But, looking over other people’s shoulders, and listening to the groans and cries, I’m struck by something. We’ve been here before. Icon jail, I mean (“Squircle” jail specifically in Tahoe’s case):

@sjolsen not really, cuz if @tantacrul evidenced one thing, it's that #UI & #UX can be quantified as "good" and/or "bad" and actually implement the best possible option given the workflows at hand (conversely to what @landley once said: #FLOSS can do UI & UX; [tho he also said that consistency is key and #Tantacrul certainly does not just design but also tests this designs more thoroughly than most GAFAMs do their products...])

And I do have to give him credit for modernizing applications that indeed need some overhaul, as #Audacity did look like something from #Windows95, #macOS9 or #Amiga (and we all can agree that any application from back then that's still around regardless if #Photoshop, #Cubase or even #Sibelius had to move on and change…).

Personally I do hate the #RibbonUI because it's wasteful in terms of screen space and demands way more clicks and mouse travel in my workflows.

So the #Ribbon clearly works better on #HiDPI, #HighResolution Desktops and #Tablets, not on a *"#LowDPI, #LowRes Keyboard and Trackpoint system…

It is entirely possible that what is actually happening is it's going to sleep, and then failing to wake up (which I think is a side effect of the modded ATX power supply). I've now slid the sleep timer in the Energy Saver panel to Never, but I'm too dumb and impatient to wait and see if this solves it, and I currently have OS9.2 installing to the IDE drive. Wish me luck, lol.

I found a #powermacg4 tower at our local thrift/food/second hand hall. It was sold by the adult dvd store, for some reason.

Anyway, it followed me home and after reinstalling the OS to get rid of the prior owner's data I have to say there's not THAT much difference between #macos9 and #macosx

People complain if I put Microsoft Bob on #macos9, or when I destroy a #retrocomputing DVD drive. But out there in the real world people are building things like this and nobody bats an eye.

That's right, a Linux distro where NodeJS is the entire userland. And they call it "lightweight"... compared to...?!?!
