You’re Allowed to Be a Beginner at This

Writers often quit not due to inability but because of unrealistic expectations of their skills. Embracing the learning process as a beginner is essential. Resting is part of writing growth, and progress can come from small, consistent efforts. Confidence grows with community support and self-acceptance, allowing writers to thrive.

Failing at Writing Is Part of Learning to Write

Many writers view failure as a setback, questioning their abilities when drafts don’t meet expectations. However, failure serves as a vital learning tool in writing. Embracing imperfect work fosters resilience and growth, while consistent practice leads to improvement. Each setback transforms into a stepping stone toward writing success and confidence.

Writing Is a Skill, Not a Personality Trait

The post challenges the belief that writing is an innate trait, emphasizing that it is a skill that can be developed. It encourages individuals, regardless of background or ability, to practice writing. Confidence comes from completing work, and persistence is more valuable than raw talent. The piece promotes accessible writing habits and emphasizes adaptability in the writing process.

A short while ago, A came to me and asked "mama how do you spell cats?"

I say C A T S... she trots off repeating " C A T S ... C A T S ...." and comes back a few minutes later teary eyed with this drawing (I drew the cat a few days ago, she added all the pink bits) "The C is tooo smaaalll!"

omg, first time she has asked how a word is spelled, and went off and WRITTEN IT!!!! With no help at all!!!

So proud!!

A very bad adults drawing of a cat in black pencil, with a small bit coloured in in blue. Above the cat in very wobbly 4yo writing is the word "CATS".

there are pink bits scattered around that apparently are mostly cat food but there's also nail polish and a very small boy and a girl with 5 fingernails each.

The Craft of Writing Behind Unforgettable Books

Anyone can learn the basic mechanics of self publishing. It’s a fairly straightforward process to format a manuscript, upload it to an eBook storefront, and even run ads. Yet simply following those steps does not guarantee success, or that readers will stay up late turning…

So I have been #writing for a little while now, and trying to get myself to publish some stuff somewhere, mostly for accountability whilst I try and improve.

Well I finally did it today, so here is a link to my first short story on my new #substack Ten Minute Romance. It's a contemporary piece about an open house event meet-cute.

A study of the number 4 by my four-year-old son:

#LearningToWrite #LearningNumbers #ChildrensDrawings #KidsDrawings

Two attempts at writing the digit 4 in orange crayon on the back of a technical schematic of a building. One of the 4s has three upward prongs, the other is a triangle with a dislocated, long right leg.Another attempt at a 4. This time more legible, but still has one too many upward prongs. One final attempt, which he settled for. Two upward prongs, of which the left one leans right much like a proper 4. The stem is slightly dislocated. It is followed by a plus, to say “4 or older”.
