this unlike the Canon Pixma 3250 inkjet printer I've been using until now, which was the crappiest piece of shit hardware I have ever owned!
Seriously, #HP #InstantInk combines all the worst features of #subscriptions and #ManagedServices like #ManagedPrintServices with neither benefits.
This is how #TriumpfAdler stays in business: You can't buy their office multifunction systems, but only get them as a subscription through a #ServiceProvider.
But for #consumer devices like an #Inkjet #Printer, this is just shafting them when instead of being a convenience (like getting #ink mailed) it's leveraged as a means to prevent the #buyer from being an #owner.
It's not as if #HPinstantInk means one gets a "#free" Printer / (or even #MultifunctionPrinter) in return like a "full service #leasing" with #cars, but rather it feels as if a car manufacturer can just decide to repo your car the moment you don't extend your "Extended Warranty Service" for another year...
The rampant #Enshittification is why I'd love to see a reguar "#2Dprinter" to be #OpenSource'd!

@0xIO32 @AquaFan @mook @glitzersachen @theintercept good question.
AFAICT no, and the only ones that don't do MIC are very few consumer devices and professional production machines (coincidentially those most likely able to make good forgeries!)…
And yes, #Inkjet Printers are a #Scam!

Learn what a Business Inkjet Printer offers, how it differs from other non-impact printers, and why it fits modern office workflows daily.
Thanks everyone for the answers and tips.
Looks like the Brother MFC-J5340DWE EcoPro could be fulfilling his requirements:
- copy on the device, without a PC attached
- zoom when copying
- scan to USB or scan to network
- price range
- LAN or USB
Can anyone confirm this one is working on Linux?
@etchedpixels @dmarti @sjvn or you got such an old #Inkjet that wasn't enshittified that'll run with #aftermarket cartridges, refilled and only black cartridge inserted.
Open Printer
I think this is a promising project.
An update to my previous post

The replacement gear came in & It works like a charm!
Unfortunately, while it goes through the motions, nothing actually prints on the paper. Previously the head had a lot of dried ink on it. I suspect there's dried ink inside somewhere.
Is there a good way to go about cleaning the printhead? Could I soak it in hot water or some cleaning solution?

Update: turns out that there's one of those pesky non-commercial clauses on this project that, unfortunately, turns this whole project into #openwashing (unless the clause is time-limited or there's a stretch goal to make it properly #copyleft ). #Inkjet

Open Printer
The surprising part is that an open-source inkjet printer took so much longer to release than an open-source full 3D printer. I wonder if it was because of patents. crowdsupply.com/open-tools/ope… #Inkjet #OpenSourceHardware
Open Printer
Not sure if it's a win for open source... or a loss by promoting more paper and resource waste. Looks neat though.

After trouble shooting various things with no success I decided to open up the printer. Guess what? Cracked drive gear! 😂
Mine is not split all the way through which is the paper rollers were still functioning but eventually the drive motor catches on the split in the gear and hangs up.
Now to order a new gear and get this thing up and running!

After verifying the ink cartridges were good I gave everything a good cleaning. I then turned on the printer and hoped for the best. The printer went through it’s start up cycle. It pulled a sheet of paper through. The rollers griped and turned well. The print head cycled from one side to the other and then suddenly stopped and an awful vibrating sound emitted from the printer.

For an upcoming project I picked up an old Canon iP90 inkjet printer.
Both the iP90 and iP90V are notorious for having a cracking drive gear. Supposedly it would grip and feed paper through the printer, which to me, would indicate that the drive gear was good. But the seller was not able to do any testing and sold it as-is.
So I took a gamble because it was a great price and came with some extras.
