New video out!
Continuing the second Arizona trip...this time, two days through what remains one of the most difficult places for me in terms of herping. Partly because it encompasses some of the driest regions of the country, and partly because it seems like the weather just always has it out for me when I'm there (last time it was horrifically dry, this time...it was too wet at the wrong hours). But cool critters appeared nonetheless, as well as some wildflowers that don't show themselves unless the rains arrive.

One brutal run in Arizona was not enough, so I returned for a second time in September, hoping for redemption. And while my target species remained...painfully elusive, the bycatch ended up turning things out much better than the previous trip.

New video is out!
A little late releasing this one (reasons why will be coming up in the next week's wildlife video), but we're wrapping up the August Arizona trip! Lizards in the sky islands and a little heartbreak on night one in the video, followed by a bit of a better bang as we left the desert state and moved into New Mexico on the way home.

A green anole pauses mid-climb, balanced on the edge of a kids scooter as sunlight catches its scales. A small moment of stillness in the middle of a busy day.

A green anole lizard stretches forward along the edge of a black scooter deck, its body extended and head raised as it looks ahead. Sunlight highlights the texture of its scales against a softly blurred outdoor background.A green anole rests on the metal edge of a scooter, viewed from above. Its body lies along the narrow surface, tail trailing behind, with fallen leaves and ground visible below.

New video out (a pinch late because today got busy...), and one of the most significant from last year!
Days 3 and 4 of the August Arizona trip started with a slog, an all-day hike with a handful of lizards but nothing else much to show for it, especially when some unpredicted major rains shut the night down. But the next day...rare birds, a particularly striking specimen of a tiger rattlesnake, and perhaps one of the biggest finds of the year hands-down snake-wise!

Two trips to Arizona were taken last year, and the first...well, it went kind of rough. But even then, cool critters made themselves known, and in this episode I don't think it's misleading to say that the lizards took the spotlight again.

Another for the people who, for reasons I cannot comprehend, are not fans of snakes. Instead, lizards and...a very, very special endemic salamander...are the headliners again! Many unique critters that call the southern stretches of New Mexico home, and over these two days quite a bit was seen. Some very cool wildflowers as well.

Every trip I take to New Mexico, I inevitably "cheat" and swing down to the Chiricahuas of southeast Arizona. Even when the mountains don't produce anything new and exciting reptile-wise, something interesting always turns up there. Three somethings, on this day...followed by a more snakey night jaunt across the desert plains.

Likely my favorite day from the New Mexico trip, even after considering the things missed. A new toad, a new snake that's a giant of its kind, a literal giant of another species, a strange mammal encounter...and a nighttime ratsnake that might just be a county record.

Exploring of a new mountain range for me in New Mexico ended up not turning up much other than plans for the future, but as night fell the tune changed. Large rattlesnakes, a tiny night snake, and a beautiful young king highlight this episode.

We're back on screen in the Land of Enchantment, a place whose few target species that I have left are...often an extreme pain to find. While the main goal was struck out on again on this day, there were quite a few critters that still made themselves known.

Finishing up the West Texas trip...and this was a day that started out, with not a lot of promise. A skink that is a little uncommon in the region though we see plenty elsewhere, and one of my usual birding spots, but reptile finds were low and cold storms drove expectations down.
But then...the Trans Pecos Holy Grail decided to make an appearance.

A slow midday (as it usually is) filled with visting the trails and botanical garden of a research center, followed by an evening that proved to be the most productive of the Texas trip with not only a couple beautiful familiar snake species, but also a couple that are brand new to the channel!

This week's wildlife installment from the West Texas trip in June is a shorter one again as not a lot showed up on this night...but the highlight critter made it worth it anyway, a perfectly colored Trans-Pecos Copperhead!

Nearly halfway into the June Texas trip was how long it took before my favorite reptiles finally started to show themselves. A little spot that I like to visit that seems oddly reliable for at least one good snake find (as well as a whole lot of birds, without fail), followed by a nighttime storm-threatened cruise that picked up a few others.

Delayed by a week due to being out filming for likely the last time this year, but the second bit from the Texas trip is now up on the YouTube channel...and it's another short installment for those who aren't into my favorite animal as snakes once again do not make an appearance. The lizards rule this one...as well as another appearance of a mammal that was only seen on the channel for the first time in the last video.

Turtle Spotlight: the Three-Toed Box Turtle!
Considered by most to be a fully separate species, Terrapene triunguis, from the Eastern, Florida, and Mexican box turtles (phylogenetics suggest it is not a subspecies of the eastern), this central US species ranges from roughly the Mississippi River Valley and Panhandle gulf coast of Florida westward into the eastern ranges of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. It is a moderately sized terrestrial animal, averaging between 4-6 but occasionally reaching 8 inches in shell length, and as name suggests sports only 3 toes on its back feet (a distinguishing trait). Their shell is usually far less patterned than oft sympatric ornate or eastern box turtles, ranging from mildly mottled or gradient shaded to one uniform flat color, yellow to deep olive (though some can also sport strong patterning, often with faded scute edges). This contrasts with the forelimbs and face which in females is often mottled in white or cream, and males can sport brilliantly fiery red and orange markings. Denizens of moist forests, meadows, and swamp edges, they are similarly also diverse in diet with everything from leafy greens to invertebrates and roadkill on the menu.
Like most turtles, the three-toed is a long-lived creature that can likely exceed 80 years in the wild, but threatened massively by habitat destruction, invasive predators, and road mortality both accidental and all too often purposeful. Their long lives mean populations are slow to rebound too, as they don’t mature for several years and everything eats the babies, so even one moderately busy road through otherwise pristine habitat can decimate their numbers. Drive with care, for these as well as all other wildlife crossing the streets (and roast everyone who targets them intentionally, they deserve no peace).
