I later saw eggs in the nest, then the nest vanished, along with a few red-winged blackbirds' nest.

A grackle is standing in a nest built in the midst of cattails.

These few days, a lone grackle has been quietly coming here to eat what the regulars don’t eat (big sunflower seeds and cracked corn). Good bird!

Behind the small plastic garden storage bench, a wary, robin-sized blackbird with emerald green iridescent head and neck is in the elm sapling pot in the fenced-in corner, eating birdseeds. The elm trunk is in the left of the bird, but blends in the background wooden fence, you almost don’t see it.

Watching Time Pass By

A lone boat-tailed grackle (Quiscalus major) stands at the edge of the bayou, poised on the muddy bank as if watching the water drift by. Not calling, not moving—just present. The posture suggests patience, or maybe something quieter: a feathered witness to the slow passage of time.

By order of the Galactic Empire, your presence is commanded at my photo gallery:

"A lone boat-tailed grackle stands at the edge of a narrow channel in the bayou, its silhouette sharp against the muted palette of water and marsh. The bird’s plumage is a deep, iridescent black with hints of midnight blue and oil-slick green, catching stray light like a secret. Its long tail arcs behind it like a punctuation mark—part rudder, part flourish.

The grackle’s posture is upright, almost statuesque, with its head slightly tilted as if listening to the slow churn of time. One foot rests forward, claws gripping the muddy bank with quiet certainty. The water beside it is still, save for a faint ripple—more suggestion than motion. Reeds and grasses frame the scene, bending gently in the breeze, their reflections ghosting across the surface.

There’s no urgency here. The bird isn’t hunting, isn’t calling. It’s simply present. Watching. Waiting. Bearing witness to the slow drift of the bayou and the soft erosion of minutes. The image feels like a pause in a long sentence—an interlude of feather and silence." - Copilot
