"'The stronger the winds [and] the colder it is, the more likely you are to develop frostbite in a short amount of time or hypothermia, says Jessica Lee of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.

Here's how wind chill works and how to protect yourself and those around you."

Just saw a Brit on BBC news reporting from the National Mall with bright red ears, he’s shivering and stomping his feet. Why would they send someone who doesn’t know how to dress in the winter? I hope someone at least suggests purchasing a hat to the poor guy.

You’re crushing it out on the winter alpine tundra.
If you can’t feel it, it’s already worse than you think.
Frostbite doesn’t care how fit you are.
It cares how wet, windy and stubborn you get.
Cold is uncomfortable. Frostbite is permanent.

"Dowling’s frostbite was so severe that a doctor had to amputate both legs below the knees. He also lost one hand and part of another, according to Prichard, who lived in Puposky, Minn., and died January 2025.

"Yellow Medicine County offered to pay a farmer to care for Dowling, but he asked commissioners instead to pay for him to attend Carleton College. Dowling went on to become a teacher, state legislator and more, including the founder of what is now Dowling Elementary School in Minneapolis."

The Yellowstone Trail was one of the first transcontinental auto routes. For a time, its headquarters were in Minneapolis.
