#flyday

My #BirdOfTheDay #BestOfTheMonth are shots I've already posted recently, or variations: a fast & furious goose, scrub jay with a big nut, pretty hybrid duck, and adorable little grebe. πŸ“·πŸŒΏπŸͺΆπŸ¦†

A photo of a Canada goose (Branta canadensis) with its wings raised and its neck outstretched in front of it with its head held low across a pond or lake's surface as it runs on the water toward the right of frame, beak open and tongue visible mid-honk, with water splashing dramatically around it. The bird's brown and tan feathers are ruffling with movement, and the water's surface is warm-hued in orange-toned lighting. The goose appears to be putting on an angry display for some threat out of the picture.A close-up photo of the head and shoulders of a California scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), a medium-sized songbird with a vibrant blue head and wings, gray underside, gray back, white throat, black eyes, white eyebrows, and black beak. It is back-lit in late afternoon lighting with its head slightly raised holding a peanut in its beak, facing toward the right of frame, with a blurred brownish-gray background behind it.A photo of the head and chest of an apparent gadwall x mallard hybrid duck (Mareca strepera x Anas platyrhynchos). It is a male duck the general size and shape of a mallard with much of the same coloring, but has the delicate gray patterned plumage of the gadwell on its wings and lower body, and iridescent reddish-brown patches on its cheeks and forehead along with deep iridescent green behind its eyes and on the back of its head. It has a yellow, mallard-like bill. It's floating on sunlit water with its head turned toward the right, and is mostly back-lit.A photo of a pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) floating on water facing the camera with its head turned to the left. It is a very cute small brown water bird with a short pale gray bill that has a thick black stripe in the middle of it, and alert brown eyes ringed with pale bare flesh. The rippling water around the grebe is a deep, dark green.

#Flyday IDs welcome for this little friend I made in my office yesterday.

Photo of a small, sepia-toned fly with golden brown eyes and narrow wings patterned like transparent picture jasper. The little fly looks like xe is sitting on an abstract brutality painting: The backdrop shows a wide, grey bar banding the frame from the lower left corner up to the upper right, a thin bar of shadow edging the dark taupe of the upper left corner and a series of alternating black and grey bars descending in perfect parallel angles down the lower right corner (it is actually the surface of an office radiator).

It's #FlyDay

If FrogDay is not your kind of buzz, how about #FlyDay?

Straight on view of fly eyes that look like a geometric brown buckyball or maybe the whole thing is a prototype of a scaled down version of Apache helicopter? The wings are back a ways and out of focus, but level with the eye "line". Legs are clasping a tiny branch that's broken off just in front of fly. Lots of angles, making it look spring loaded and ready to *zip* away.

Good Morning! May you fly through the day victorious... #FlyDay #photography #birds #lorikeet #UmbrellaTree #nature #wildlife #gift #EastCoastKin (expect a few more lorikeets with umbrellas. 'Tis the season)

It's #FlyDay

It's #FlyDay and my #Birds post today is a Snowy Egret. I'm getting used to the new camera and how it does focusing - getting some good BIF picturs. πŸͺΆ #EastCoastKin #Nature #Wildlife #Photography

A Snowy Egret, flying off into the sunset, calm waters below. The sun is just catching the right eye and yellow around the bill.

STALK. EYED. FLY.

#Diptera #entomology #flyday

A fly, its body skinny, with two thorns sticking out backwards. Its eyes sit on opposite stalks, the span between them is almost as long as its body. A very strange, alien looking creature.

Happy #Flyday

I have fallen off the face of the earth again. Work gets in the way of life... I took this photo at Occoquan Bay on a frigid December day. Its easier to take thier photos when they are too cold to move. Despite the below freezing temps, I saw half a dozen species of arthropods. I'll try to post more...

A small dark fly on creamy colored dead wood. It has golden hairs that seem to look damp. It has large eyes that are dark brownish red.

I took this yesterday, and thought it might be a #FlyDay post - then #Feathers&Form is the #BirdoftheDay prompt, which fits too. A Great Egret takes to the air. #Birds πŸͺΆ #EastCoastKin #Photography #Nature #Wildlife

A Great Egret in flight, sun in the background, dark legs trailing and long yellow bill out front. Necked curled in 'flight mode'. Flying over calm waters in the harbour.
