#ffado

@mosgaard

I'm using a MacBook Pro 2017 simply for the reason of #RME #TotalMix. The software I use on #macOS is basically identical to what I use on Linux, it's called #Ardour. :awesome:

I don't do mixdown on that old MacBook. It's just my high-quality mobile recording setup with the Fireface 400. There is neither budget nor a proper reason to change this. The preamps/converters of the old Fireface things are still very good.

Of course, a MacBook Pro 2017 is beyond dead for #Apple fan persons.

Concerning #FFADO, it turns out to be a permission problem.

I can
sudo ffado-dbus-server
and then
sudo ffado-mixer

And I can do stuff. Of course, for everyday use, one should configure this to work as normal (non-root) user.

When I tried back in the day with Jack and the ffado-backend to Jack, the Fireface 400 worked reliably on #Linux, but with the #ALSA drivers I'm not so sure. I had hickups and strangely it didn't sound right. But also not wrong. Or maybe my hearing got twisted on the ffado rage…

Me: #Linux is great at still supporting old hardware.

Also me: Plugs in his #RME #Fireface400 and runs into the fact that #ffadomixer doesn't work no more.

(Yes, I did start FFADO DBus manually, didn't help.)

(The device has an #ALSA kernel driver by now which sort of works, so no #ffado backend to #jack needed… but you can't even adjust the gains of the preamps without ffado-mixer.)

(Usually I use this thing with macOS because… well because… *sigh*)

EDIT: It's a permission issue… ffado-mixer and ffado-dbus-server must run as the same user, and the latter must have permission to access the hardware.

By default, PipeWire uses ALSA drivers for FireWire interfaces, which usually works fine, but the latency is terribad. Thankfully, PipeWire learned how to FFADO

FireWire + FFADO With PipeWire

@Venn
Nice to see #FFADO still alive! I'm wondering if any of the manufacturers still offers new versions of their proprietary drivers to newest OS:s.

@tekknovator I've mentioned , , , and

Obviously not all of these are active at the same time, ffado and alsa are mutually exclusive IIUC

ffado and usb are also not both being used to connect to the same audio interface at the same time.

But whether using jack/ffado or alsa/usb or jack/alsa/usb the problem persists to a greater or lesser extent.

that said there are possible setups I havent tested and it is different for every audio interface because drivers differ.

Thinking of trying again for production.

Previous attempts exposed serious flaws that i couldn't work with. Specifically inconsistent tested betwen restarts
The advent of gives me some hope that a new audio stack might help.

Can anyone recommend a distro that is closest to production-ready using a based stack?

I'm also not sure how pipewire interacts with device drivers which usually require(d) .

I've been a mac user since 1988 - I tried to use for starting around 2016, and used it as my main system for ~ 1 yr around 2020 but ended up giving up and going back to mac.

The final straw was an issue with inconsistent in or possibly that totally destroyed my trust in the synchronicity of .

I'm hoping to try again and that might improve things. Would love to talk to anyone who does overdubs and has latency tested their system.

#pipewire has recently appeared on my radar and looks very promising!

Unfa did a nice video about this just recently as well:

I'm currently using an old (but good!) firewire audio card in my studio and it's been working fine with #jackaudio + #ffado so far.

Pipewire looked like it didn't support firewire, but it now supports the old (somewhat broken) ALSA firewire driver that was fixed and merged into the 5.14 kernel:

Exciting!

here's some more thumbing around. it's just improve without any plan or anything. basically mood. it's a bit slow and somber, but chill

it's actually a B mixolydian mode, but i'm resolving on E, so it gets more of an E-major E-penatonic minor bridge as a scale.

it's not mixed or anything, i'm just kinda playing around here. recorded with #ardour using #ffado drivers
