Catholics around the world will soon enter the Lenten season, an annual
40-day period of sacrifice, prayer, and repentance that ends on Easter Sunday. The Onion shares tips for observing Lent.
Try starting with something shorter like Yom Kippur and working your way up.
Check Google Maps for the nearest wander-able desert.
Remind your children that they're fasting because of the Lord and not because you can't afford groceries.
Don't be too hard on yourself if you slip up and worship Baal once or twice.
God's usually pretty busy on Wednesdays, so you can cheat all you want and He won't notice.
Have an excuse ready for when your wife suggests giving up alcohol.
Remember that you're not competing with anyone except God.
Convert to Islam before Lent starts, then convert back before Ramadan rolls around.
When it is almost over, think of something you haven't done for the past 40 days and say that's what you gave up.

Growing up Catholic with evangelicals in my family, I knew the animosity the latter held for the former.

They seemed to like the then Pope for his anti communist bonafides.

Now that one they don’t like dies, you can see the animosity the right wing evangelicals have for them.

Growing up #catholic I had to spend the day eating hot cross buns, sitting through a seemingly endless, depressing Mass (inevitably by someone wearing stinky aftershave or perfume), and being given a huge guilt trip if I chose to do anything else. My mom was liberal about pretty much everything and not strictly religious..but she was oddly strict about #goodfriday

True story: I have a sister who's a member of Opus Dei. She also wears a chain cilice around her waist, and I hear tell that she's got the scars to prove it. But while I've always thought that was some kooky-ass shit (to say nothing of bearing 11 single-birth children + several miscarriages), she did at least have the choice to do all of that. (Before anyone asks: no, I really don't believe she was coerced into any of this. I've known her my whole life. She's just like this.) She really could have put the brakes on any part of that, if she wanted to, but she's a seriously dyed-in-the-wool believer who was ecstatic when the founder of Opus Dei was canonized. I'm convinced that giving up the (definitely metaphorical, but maybe also literal) self-flagellation is a choice she has never seriously considered.

These women? No such choices available. Straight up slavery and constant abuse for years.

A lot of liberals will point to The Handmaid's Tale as an example of what they fear may happen in the future. I'm a big believer in the value of fiction and narrative as tools for conveying complex ideas, but it'd really be great if people would get clued in: that's not fiction, and it's not only in some hazy vision of the future. It just doesn't usually happen to middle-class white people.

At any rate, best of luck to the plaintiffs in this case. I really hope they're all able to get whatever support they need.
