Abstract:
"This speculative paper explores the interplay between the Solarpunk movement, resilience design, #EnvironmentalJustice, and #sustainable #urban development within the context of the transition to the post-oil era. With a concentrated focus on the new and potential forms of post-oil urbanscapes, the study aims to explore how Solarpunk-inspired resilience design could address transitioning challenges and opportunities while creating a capacity for #SocialEquity and resilience in urban environments. Through an analysis of theoretical frameworks and speculative resiliency strategies, the study seeks to represent the potential of Solarpunk-inspired approaches to foster more #inclusive, #equitable, and sustainable #communities. The research methodology focuses on a theoretical review to investigate the conceptual foundations and potential design outcomes of the Solarpunk movement and provides resilience design strategies. While drawing a future projection of the post-oil urbanscapes, the paper discusses the reimagined petroculture heritages. Key findings of the study underscore the transformative and speculative potential of Solarpunk resilience design in advancing environmental justice and sustainability goals. By prioritizing community engagement, participatory decision-making, and decentralized #renewable energy systems, the Solarpunk movement offers innovative solutions to address the alternative ways of change in urban spaces. In conclusion, this study adds to the conversation about Solarpunk resilience design by looking at possible solutions and discussing how #EnvironmentalJustice, sustainability, and Solarpunk’s theory are connected in the context of cities going through a post-oil transition. Through its interdisciplinary approach, the study offers speculative future projections and invites architects, designers, policymakers, planners, and practitioners to a creative thinking process to create more just, equitable, and sustainable cities in the era of energy transition."

"The 2nd National Agroecology Symposium, held in Nairobi from July 10–11, 2025, marked a pivotal moment in #Kenya’s food systems transformation.
"The event brought together farmers, researchers, civil society, private sector actors, media, and policymakers with one clear message: Agroecology must move from the margins to the centre of national agricultural strategy. It is not just an alternative; it is the most viable path forward to achieve our intertwined goals for #people, #nature, and #climate—without compromising one for the other.
Agroecology offers a coherent framework for #RegeneratingSoils, producing safe and nutritious food, and building #ClimateResilient and #equitable #FoodSystems.
"As #ClimateChange intensifies, this approach provides Kenya and other #AfricanNations a powerful opportunity to lead a just transition—rooted in #LocalKnowledge, backed by #science, and responsive to the realities of #smallholder #farmers.
A crossroads for Kenya’s food systems
"Kenya’s food systems are at a crossroads. The dominant model—based on chemical-intensive agriculture and ultra-processed foods—is driving soil degradation, poor nutrition, increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases, and the pollution of our rivers and lakes. This model also contributes significantly to #biodiversity loss and #GreenhouseGasEmissions.
"Alternatively, a more resilient and #sustainable path is within reach—one that aligns human health with ecological integrity. But this transition cannot be left to smallholder farmers alone. It requires coordinated leadership from governments—particularly ministries of agriculture, health, environment, and finance—as well as development partners, scientists, and the private sector.
"Farmers should not be expected to feed a growing population and withstand escalating #ClimateShocks while being under-supported or misdirected by ineffective policies and subsidies. Without the right investments and incentives, we risk deepening the crisis.
What agroecology is—and isn’t
"Agroecology is too often misunderstood as a nostalgic return to low-productivity farming. In reality, it is a sophisticated, evidence-informed, and farmer-driven approach to transforming food systems in ways that are locally appropriate and ecologically sound. It is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but a dynamic practice that integrates scientific research with #TraditionalKnowledge.
"The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) outlines 10 elements of agroecology, while the High-Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) has identified 13 principles. These include #RecyclingNutrients, enhancing biodiversity, strengthening synergies, and co-creating knowledge."

#Toronto #Canada - "#RightToFood and four Indigenous-led Community #FoodCentres have released Seeds of Sovereignty, a new living brief that shares stories, truths, and policy recommendations from Indigenous food leaders across the country.
"The document is both a reflection and a call to action. It outlines six key recommendations aimed at strengthening and celebrating Indigenous food sovereignty including the enactment of an #IndigenousFoodSovereigntyAct, reform of food safety and licensing regulations, recognition of Indigenous law as legitimate governance over food systems, and sustained, unrestricted funding aligned with #Seasonal cycles and community leadership.
" 'The Western system limited our imagination,' says Raymond Jordan Johnson-Brown, Indigenous Network Manager at Right To Food. 'Seeds of Sovereignty invites policymakers and partners to step into the imaginary — to reimagine what #equitable food systems look like when led by #IndigenousPeoples.'
"Jolene Andrew, Director of Community Development at #Líl̓wat Community Food Centre, adds: 'We don't need permission — we just need to do it. This brief is a reminder that sovereignty is already being lived in our communities every day.'
"Developed through gatherings in #Iqaluit, #Nunavut (2024) and #Líl̓watNation, #BritishColumbia (2025), Seeds of Sovereignty amplifies the collective voice of Right To Food's Indigenous Community Food Centres and Indigenous Network. It highlights what is already thriving in communities — hunters harvesting country food, youth learning traditional skills, Elders teaching, and families gathering — affirming that food sovereignty is alive.
" 'Our communities are not waiting. We are organizing, harvesting, teaching land-based skills, and pushing policy,' the brief states. 'Food is not a service — it's a right, a relationship, a responsibility.' "
