#datavisualisation

2026-02-08

If you're a data scientist or a psychologist and you've got a skill for data visualisation, please feel free to take our raw data and do something great with it.

Every day, we ask the people of Mastodon how happy they are and how happy they feel they are in relation to others.

We record the results here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d

Now that I got a #datalakehouse in a #Europeancloud I want more: some actual data to query, #pyspark and notebooks and #datavisualisation. In this blogpost I get Project Jupyter Hub running, I get open data from the #EuropeanParliament and try to visualise that data in #PowerBI. Getting the connection working turned out to be an expensive affair.

The end of my 2024 Rugby League data visualisation project focussing on St Helens Saints, rounding up game 30 of the 2024 season, the season as a whole and what I learnt from the project - fulltimesportsfan.wordpress.co #RugbyLeague #DataVisualisation #rstats

Matrix chart of which Saints players play together most often when Saints concede. It looks like the top left quarter of a fuzzy mosaic of the sun. The darkest, most often together group are in the bottom right. They are Lomax, Blake, Welsby, Whitley, Matautia, Dodd, Clark, Makinson, Mbye, Sironen, Lees, Bell, Percival and Delaney. The quarter of the axis up from them is paler, these players are together less often when Saints concede. They are Stephens, Vaughan, Davies, Paasi, Robertson, Ritson, Batchelor, Bennison, Knowles and Hurrell. Finally at the top and leftermost are the palest and least often together section. They are Walmsley, Wingfield, Royle, Whitby and Burns. They are players who were injured or played few minutes.

Following the publication of the 2024-25 Origin Destination Model by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) last week, here is a seven-year aggregated rail passenger flow for FY2018-19 to FY2024-25 on a simplified centre-line track-model base model.

This may be of interest as it shows a continuing trend of increasing passenger numbers following COVID.

Details on each of the 2 587 mainline stations are available here github.com/anisotropi4/kingfis

Democracy in society resource alert.

This is a fantastic resource on the quality of and threats to information systems in our digital world. Also, free book - a comprehensive and very relevant report.

There is also a visualisation tool to see all issues, topics and related areas discussed in the report. See screenshot.

Information ecosystem and troubled democracy – Interactive Map
Developed in partnership with CNRS Institute for Complex Systems.
This map represents a statistical summary of the thematic content of the report. The network graph represents relations between the words in the report, placing them closer to each other the more they are related. The bigger the node, the more present the word is, signalling its role in defining what the report or chapter is about. The colors represent words that are closely related to each other and can be interpreted as a topic.

The map was generated by Giovanni Maggi using the GarganText tool – developed by the CNRS Institute of Complex Systems – on the basis of the report’s text. A Global Synthesis of the State of Knowledge on News Media, AI and Data Governance
This inaugural meta-analysis provides a critical assessment of the role of information ecosystems in the Global North and Global Majority World, focusing on their relationship with information integrity (the quality of public discourse), the fairness of political processes, the protection of media freedoms, and the resilience of public institutions.

The report addresses three thematic areas with a cross-cutting theme of mis- and disinformation:

Media, Politics and Trust;
Artificial Intelligence, Information Ecosystems and Democracy;
and Data Governance and Democracy.
The analysis is based mainly on academic publications supplemented by reports and other materials from different disciplines and regions (1,664 citations selected among a total corpus of over +2700 resources aggregated). The report showcases what we can learn from landmark research on often intractable challenges posed by rapid changes in information and communication spaces.

What is "good" data presentation and why should #DH care?
Visualisation is not only a technical skill, but a humanistic act.

@vanlinduist.bsky.social gives her thoughts why humanists are not only well-equipped but also needed in discussions about #datavisualisation.

In a desperate attempt to distract myself from the play-off game today, have the next post in my series about St. Helens Saints 2024 season - fulltimesportsfan.wordpress.co Game 29 and some patterns are reinforcing themselves and others are breaking up. #RugbyLeague #DataVisualisation #rstats

Matrix chart of players who play together when Saints score. The bottom quadrant is a mid-orange. Then there are three players in a paler orange section (Whitley, Bennison and Batchelor), then the darkest section, a purple-orange two of Welsby and Blake. Above them is much paler indicating that those players are not together as often when Saints score.

There's two clear teams, the most often together (a full match day 17 - Welsby, Blake, Whitley, Bennison, Batchelor, Dodd, Percival, Bell, Hurrell, Mata'utia, Sironen, Lomax, Mbye, Clark, Makinson, Delaney and Lees) and the less often together (12 - Royle, Whitby, Vaughan, Wingfield, Walmsley, Robertson, Burns, Paasi, Knowles, Davies, Stephens and Ritson).
