Huike offering his arm to Bodhidharma, ink wash painting by Sesshū Tōyō, 1496, Japan. This dramatic scene illustrates one of the most famous legends in Zen history. According to the story, Huike, a devoted seeker of enlightenment, approached Bodhidharma, who was meditating in silence, and requested to become his student. Bodhidharma, known for his rigorous and uncompromising approach, initially rejected Huike, testing his resolve. Undeterred, Huike stood outside in the snow, demonstrating his sincerity and determination. After hours of waiting, in an extraordinary act of devotion, Huike severed his own arm and presented it to Bodhidharma as a gesture of his unwavering commitment to the path of awakening. Moved by this extreme display of dedication, Bodhidharma finally accepted Huike as his disciple, marking the beginning of a profound teacher-student relationship. This story, though likely apocryphal, symbolizes the intense discipline and perseverance valued in the Chán (Zen) tradition, as well as the transformative power of the master-disciple bond. Stories like this obscure the historical Bodhidharma beneath accumulated layers of myth and symbolism — a process this post aims to critically investigate. I had the day to myself. There was nothing really compelling me to go and explore, so I worked on music for a while then went out in the evening for dinner and shopping. #KanazawaStation is an architectural marvel. My friend told me when it was first built, the locals hated it, but when it began attracting positive attention from the international architectural community, suddenly everyone was proud of it! 🤣 #Kanazawa #金沢駅 #daruma #だるま

A nighttime photo of the exterior of Kanazawa Station, taken from the main walkway. The walkway is covered with an enormous, high roof made of metal bars in a graceful lattice-like pattern. There are pedestrians walking beneath. The main gate is visible. It consists of two columns supporting a roof. All three components are made of wood, painted bright red. Each column is a set of beams arranged in a circle, with each beam tilted diagonally to create a sort of drum shape.A daruma figure in a glass display case. The figure is about four feet high and made entirely from a hard shiny material, perhaps some kind of plastic. A daruma is typically depicted as a person with a large head and a round squat body with no limbs, and wrapped entirely in material with only the face visible. This one differs from the traditional daruma design: it has eyes that are black circles with a little pie slice missing from each (resembling Pac Man). He has a thick bushy moustache. The fabric is golden and decorated with brightly colored flowers of all kinds, including lotuses.

Not only is the original garden long lost (reinvented by Ashikaga Yoshimasa in 1457 and completely landscaped again in mid-Edo times), but the view of Mt Kinugasa has been completely, and rather unforgivably, obscured by the expansion of Ritsumeikan University (立命館大学).

Buddhist Quote for Today: Every suffering is a buddha-seed, because suffering impels mortals to seek wisdom. But you can only say that suffering gives rise to buddhahood. You can’t say that suffering is buddhahood. Your body and mind are the field. Suffering is the seed, wisdom the sprout, and buddhahood the grain. — Bodhidharma (fl. c. 5th–6th century CE)
