Justice Brewer [between 1900 and 1910]

1 photographic print. | David J. Brewer, full-length portrait, walking at construction site, facing left.

David Josiah Brewer was an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1890 to 1910. An appointee of President Benjamin Harrison, he supported states' rights, opposed broad interpretations of Congress's power to regulate interstate commerce, and voted to strike down economic regulations that he felt infringed on the freedom of contract. He and Justice Rufus W. Peckham were the "intellectual leaders" of the Fuller Court, according to the legal academic Owen M. Fiss. Brewer has been viewed negatively by most scholars, though a few have argued that his reputation as a reactionary deserves to be reconsidered. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_J.

loc.gov/item/95503026/

The image is a black-and-white photograph featuring a man standing outdoors in what appears to be a construction or renovation site. The man is dressed in formal attire, including a long coat, trousers, and a top hat, which suggests the photo was taken in the late 19th or early 20th century. He is holding a long object in his right hand, possibly a tool or a pointer.

In the background, there are wooden beams and structural supports, indicating that a building or structure is being constructed or renovated. There are also piles of wood and construction debris scattered around the area. A person can be seen in the background, working on the ground, possibly involved in the construction process.

The photograph has a caption at the bottom that reads "JUSTICE BREWER" with the number "669-7" next to it, which likely refers to a catalog or reference number for the image. The overall setting and attire suggest a historical context, possibly related to a significant figure or event.
