#commodore16

@hkz Nice! I did get PCBWay to build me the Fixteen, and when one of them didn't work (the danger of working with second-hand parts), the original author pointed me towards this expansion instead:

Apparently there is some software that can do fun things with the extra memory banks. (There is also a 256K version)

Released the #SIXTEEROIDS RAM expansion/replacement for the #Commodore16.

It's an interposer that sits between the TED and the mainboard, disables the DRAM and controls two SRAMs. In this mode, the original DRAM can be optionally removed. A jumper can be used to disable the module and enable the DRAM.

It's mostly through-hole, except for two optional TVS packs.

If you like my work and wish to support me, you can throw me a few credits via Ko-Fi ☕

⚠️WARNING⚠️ I still need to perform thorough testing on this board. Will do once I recover all I need to turn my C16 into an usable machine.

Debating myself on what to do with this #commodore16 expansion.

On one hand, I'd like to test things a bit more before releasing them.
On the other I don't have many accessories ready for a #commodore16 (it'll be a while before I can get a joystick adapter made, and I need to find a non-ugly way to wire up a SD2IEC).

Don't want to hold this project too long, if people want to experiment with it. Was thinking of writing the readme and add a big-ass "WARNING: seems to work but still needs to undergo a lot of testing".

What do you think?

So... This may be a rather trite question, but...
How do you call a #commodore16 with 64kB of RAM?

Because it looks like the SRAM Adapter decided to work on the first try. Which surely means it's going to break in nasty and difficult to debug ways.

Here is another project I've been working on: github.com/ytmytm/1551-RAMBOar

It's a RAMBOard, but for 1551. As far as I know this is the first of its kind. Just like on 1541-II a small daughterboard that plugs into the ROM socket. It adds 8K of RAM ($8000-$9FFF) plus 8K of extra ROM space ($A000-$BFFF).

There is a patched ROM which uses the extra RAM as a track cache: it reads the entire track in one disk revolution, then serves subsequent sector reads from memory. Same idea as the track caching ROMs I did for 1541 and 1571.

The project also includes a tiny fastloader wedge (HypaRAM) that calls the code embedded in the patched ROM. The same fastloader is already supported by the latest version of Parobek ROM for C16/116/Plus4.

The performance is on par with DolphinDOS - about 27x faster than a stock 1541, about 7x faster than a stock 1551.

And once I'm done with the Flaccid Ostrich, there'll be this little thing to deal with: the #Commodore16 SRAM expansion. Fingers crossed that it won't be too painful to get working.

@root42 #PCBWay sent me this picture at time of construction with the caption "U1 cannot insert totally because of two pin headers , pls confirm".

That's the socket for the TED, though, so I guess it shouldn't affect the RAM.

Sometimes it shows garbage on start, sometimes just a black screen. I'll leave it in, disabled.

Uh oh, that is not good. The second unit gives me a black screen with the expansion installed. I pushed in the RAM chips and got some junk on the screen instead.

Moving the jumper to 16K makes it boot up again, so at least I didn't kill the TED chip (I *did* bend its legs slightly on extraction, so I was worried).

So, are the RAM chips on the Fixteen bag, or the assembly? I have no clue. I'll lend it in, but turned off. At least the other one works fine.

So, does this make it a Commodore 64? Or maybe a Commodore Minus 4?

Spurred by the fact that I found a working #commodore16, I decided to investigate the memory expansion thing a bit.

There are commercial solutions. There are DIY solder-on-board solutions, there's this very nice plug-n-play solution : github.com/SukkoPera/Fixteen

My only thing with the 'Fixteen' is that it recreates most of the mux circuit, plus uses DRAMs...
I wonder if I could do without the mux and attach SRAM directly.

This is the schematic I came up with.
Would still be plug-n-play, but with SRAMs...

Ok, this is even more surprising than the working SNES.

The #Commodore16 actually starts up and shows a picture.

... maybe they connected the RF output to composite input in the TV to test it?

Found at the #fleamarket today. These were all junked, here is how they were sold:
- Power light only from the #SNES (I bet a dead PPU or CPU)
- #Megadrive 2 in unknown conditions (seller did not have any accessory). The pokemon decals on it are especially ironic.
- #Playstation(s) no power or unable to read discs
- #Commodore16 is "dead"

No time to check them myself now.
I have cats to feed, mushrooms to cook and keycaps to label.

Esta nueva versión del arcade "Green Beret" supera con creces la adaptación oficial que se hizo en su día para el Commodore 16. Un auténtico horror.

¡Enhorabuena a Arlasoft por este remake!
