Finally, signs of a real crackdown on dark-patterns. Banning kids from social and chat does nothing but allow platforms to continue exploiting Adults with dark-patterns. Its the dark-patterns that are the problem and what should actually be banned.

We’ve been thinking about authentication as something that should fade into the background once it’s set up.

Driftya now supports Passkeys and time-based 2FA, aiming to reduce risk without adding repeated decisions or unnecessary steps over time.

We also support SimpleLogin for people who prefer to keep their account separate from a permanent email identity.

Good security should be quiet. It should work, and then mostly disappear.

I’m very happy with my new Onyx Boox Go 7, a b/w e-reader I got for myself.

I can just start it, drop some ebooks onto it, and be on the go. So simple, just what a good tool should be.

Optionally, I could create a Boox account for easier syncing or log into the PlayStore to install apps – but only if I want to!

I never owned an e-reader, so will have to see how I’ll use it. But so far it feels very comfortable to read with and I hope to get back into the habit.

Evening at the lighthouse
Servers humming like a tide you trust.
Backups done, lights trimmed, no drama on the horizon.
Decentralisation isn’t noise, it’s cadence.
Slow systems. Clear ownership.
A light that stays on when the weather turns.

That’s why I run a private Forgejo git.

Same git. Same workflows.
Different posture.

No feeds. No behavioural harvesting.
Just version control that does what it says on the tin.

Email is plumbing.
Git is posture.

I’ve been spending time tightening the hidden parts of Driftya lately.

Not new features. Not visible changes.
Just making sure the foundation is solid.

Strong security headers, strict content policies, and defensive defaults so notes stay where they belong.

If a platform is about writing, it should also feel safe without asking for trust.

Clear sky.
Fishing fleet riding a calm sea.
The beam turns, steady as ever.
No drama. No storm.
Just quiet infrastructure doing its job.
That’s the thing about lighthouses.
They don’t shout. They operate.

Sysops note:
Learning happens in the gaps between design and cock-ups.
Root disk filled, Postgres did the right thing and refused to start, backups proved their worth, DB moved onto its own volume, system calmer than before.
Architecture improves fastest when reality gets a vote.

I’m learning that reducing pressure sometimes means explaining things more, not less.

Wrote a small “how it works” and FAQ for a quiet note-passing app I’m building, mostly to make non-action feel okay.

Evening light on stone and salt.
The beacon wakes, the sea keeps breathing, and for a moment the internet behaves itself.
Quiet tech. Steady light.

Most social apps are designed to keep you inside them.

Oweo is designed to get out of your way.

☑ No algorithmic reshuffling.
☑ No “while you were gone.”
☑ No pressure to perform.

You see what the people you follow post - in time order and you decide when you’re done.

That restraint is the feature.

I was reminded again by a post, that the Fediverse appears to be losing active users in recent months.

What could this actually mean though?

Personally what first comes to my mind are positive things:

- Less noise doing the rounds.
- More people are turning away from distraction.
- This is natural for a network that lacks people/algos pulling strings in the background to keep up engagement - there will be ups and downs.

Morning at the Lighthouse.
Dogs still curled on the couches.
The Keeper makes his rounds.

Beyond the mist, strange anchors drag and cables sigh — but the light stays steady.

We keep watch.

We escaped SMS for prettier apps,
but when money moves and doors unlock,
the old signal still rings first.
Apps whisper when they feel like it.
Infrastructure insists.
That’s why banks still text you.
Not nostalgia ; accountability.
Sometimes the least exciting light
is the one that never fails.

🌘 Lighthouse Lore — Night Watch

At 22:00, the Lighthouse does not deploy.
It observes.
Backups have run.
Alerts are quiet.
The graphs look… suspiciously calm.
This is not the hour for “one last tweak”.
This is the hour for ale, dogs, and trusting systems built to run without applause.
Good night, keepers.
If it breaks now, it was already broken.

🖥️ Lighthouse Lore — Systems Watch (Cheeky Edition)

A reminder from the Lighthouse:
If your “platform” needs a daily sacrifice, three dashboards, and a Slack channel called 🔥-urgent-again, it’s not robust — it’s just dramatic.

Good systems are boring.
They don’t scream.
They don’t trend.
They quietly do the job while you’re making tea and pretending not to watch the graphs.
Build dull.
Test backups.
Mock anyone who says “it’s probably fine”.

The lighthouse is in its slippers.
The servers are wearing cardigans.
The kettle has been promoted to senior management.

The sea is politely murmuring,
the dogs are auditing the biscuit supply,
and the light goes round and round
like it’s got nowhere else to be (because it doesn’t).

Nothing urgent. Nothing loud.
Just a small, stubborn glow
doing its best against the weekend.

We’ll keep the light on 💡

The web gets loud at dusk — dashboards blinking, feeds shouting, algorithms jangling their loose change.
Up here, the Lighthouse stays steady.
Quiet servers. Human pace. No bait, no burn.

If you’re tired of the noise, you know where we are.
The light’s on. Always was.
