Rereading Dreams from the Witch House: Female Voices of Lovecraftian Horror.

"All Our Salt-Bottled Hearts" by Sonya Taaffe is just heartbreaking.

Lovecraft created Innsmouth and Deep Ones as odes to his xenophobic fear of miscegenation and race mixing.

I've read many stories that studied them with a more nuanced eye and this is one of the best. What does it mean to have your heritage blasted and erased by an angry government? How does your diluted bloodline fair when the dreams start?

I've read Ruthanna Emrys and this story could easily fit in her world.

Sympathy for anyone who's ever felt alone and apart, for those who were loved but never understood.

When I'm out taking a walk, I frequently take breaks on benches (especially if the bench is near some ducks). I'll contently sit there until the number one reason to quickly go pops up in the distance: a talkative person trying to lock eyes with me from a million kilometers away. My pace is extremely slow, so I enter a tense minute. Will I make it?! Fortunately their eager eyes shine as bright as those of a cat caught in a camera's flashlight at night, so the warning arrives early enough for me to have ample time to get away. I'm so sorry, but I really, really, really don't want to talk about the weather while out on a walk. This is my downtime. I'll make it up to you by listening to you complain about the lack of car parking spaces these days while I'm stuck in the queue at the pharmacy, okay?

Speaking of random talks that only interest a few, did you know that at the end of the 16th century a Dutch expedition tried to reach China by going through the Northeast Passage? Their ship got stuck in the ice at Novaya Zemlya and the crew had to survive the winter there. A few died. Enter this book. It imagines the consciousness of an anonymous crew member getting buried in the frozen ground there along with his body, after perishing during this tragic journey. The poor soul has been there for over 400 years. But now there's climate change and the ice is thawing and so is his silence. He's warming up. He's talking and talking and he's not done yet. You're done? Too bad. He'll talk some more.

This is an artsy and interesting book, but just not one for me. This guy talks about his life, his time on the ship, humanity, the world and how it has changed. Some of it I found absorbing to read, most of it... not so much. The nature writing was nice, but there wasn't a lot of it. I got really tired. Eventually I felt like I was the one stuck under the ice, accompanied by someone's rambling grandpa who refuses to take his medicine and go to bed. Thank you for the wisdom and jokes, but please, leave me in peace now.

But here's something odd that does have my full attention. I waited for months for this book at the library. Who was reading this for ages? I don't know. But when I finally received the book, there were a few sentences underlined with pencil. About three passages, if I remember correctly. They were all about kobolds. Anytime a description of a kobold pops up in this book, someone went: yes, let me underline that. Who are you? Why? Are you researching odd creatures in Dutch literature? Do you just like or hate kobolds? Come and tell me (but not while I'm out on a bench).

I think I’m going to have to disagree with Austen here. If my love was disappointing, the last thing I would want to do is be friends with them. BUT! If the quote also suggests that friendship is with someone else and not with the disappointed love, I’m all in.

🧵 I just discovered there are reviews for my books on #StoryGraph ! Look at this one for Chalice of Caladriai! (Also... when someone *gets* it! It has always bugged me how books often completely ignore the fallout that any normal person would be dealing w/ after the experiences in the story!)😊🥹

This concept of "what happens *after*?" was a BIG part of Chalice of Caladriai. What happens after a kid is forced to confront an evil adult hell bent on destroying everything? How do they deal with that? And what if a friend paid a steep price for that "win"? What then?

How are the friendship dynamics affected? What about the supporting characters? What happens to them? These were all things that were dealt with in CoC, along with the usual mix of action, magic, and mayhem. I am SO HAPPY someone else wanted to know, too!

In the next book, Team Arcania will be dealing with repairing their friendships and the aftermath of book 4's cliffhanger ending (I love my cliffhangers, what can say? 😏) and then there's the two big reveals from CoC that are going to play parts in the rest of the series, too!

#AmReading Snuff by Terry Pratchett, last in a buddy read of all the Vimes books, and though there are some laugh out loud parts I'm sadly finding it "off" in the same way I found Raising Steam off. This may just be how it's going to be with the final books in his series.

I think that the last week was slightly more hectic than Present Me can tolerate, so I spent the last few days with weird sleeps and a flare-up of medical stuff. No regrets, just a little more caution, going forward.
2 meals out, brewery visit: Chinatown Dining Week (Padmamadi) and Seoul Bite in Leduc, as well as Bent Stick Brewery. Coronation Park Sports and Leisure Centre grand opening on Friday: I want to visit this bouldering wall in the future.
Saturday night was my #fermentation class, and I have a really active ginger bug to use for future drinks. Of course, I've been sorting through everything I own and gave away my growlers last week. I need to look for more. I have this excellent pair of size 8 hockey skates to give to a good home.
I'll return today to the eco station with my e-waste, and to the Re-Use Centre with my pots and various items.
