This excellent video and link to the configs by @justaguylinux has me wanting to install and explore i3wm:

youtube.com/watch?v=0xrUVjFKD6E

I have this notion of configuring my Xorg desktop on Alpine Linux to have a single desktop with all windows as tabs, and i3wm has a built-in tab mode.

@passthejoe
I use a tiling window manager in which I can create and manage terminals easily. Is there some reason I might want to use a terminal multiplexer?

Help :)

Being a FreeBSD/Linux sysadmin for ages, I’ve spent most of my life using those OSes headless (them, not me) on the server side and macOS on the desktop side.

Now that I want to try and get a proper FreeBSD desktop I’m facing a whole new field of knowledge I don’t have (yet).

Is there a good and comprehensive resource that explains layer after layer the structure of a full desktop cake?

What’s the «Desktop» role (ex. LXQT), what’s the «Window Manager» role (ex. XFWM4), what’s the «Graphics Platform» role (ex. X11) and how do they plug/interact, how do one chooses the layers for one’s desktop cake, etc. ?
Where does the login part comes into play? What’s the difference between X11 and Xorg? Can you mix & match anything?

I've removed KDE from my main system. There's much to like about it, but I haven't used it for months. Now I vacillate between Hyprland and Niri.
No more graphical text editors! Just nvim.
I haven't removed my graphical file manager yet. That will be next to go; I'm using Ranger more and more.

@dennyhenke I was just looking for a #WindowManager that could use those themes, but I fear there aren't any, even in the #GNUStep camp which should be the nearer to those sensibilities (I used unar theunarchiver.com/command-line to unpack those SIT files from @macthemes

Would it be too much if I started reacting to seeing #Windows interfaces by pretending I didn't know which #Linux #WindowManager that was? Maybe recommending they switch to #KDE? :kde: :linux:

Introducing #Yashiki: A new tiling window manager for macOS.

If you miss #River or #AwesomeWM on your Mac, this is for you.

It features tag-based workspace management and an external layout engine (plugin system), heavily inspired by the River philosophy.
I built this over the weekend because I needed something closer to my Linux workflow.

Also, I think the #WindowManager needs to support #UTF8 natively, so the title bar doesn't show #bakemoji when viewing a page with #Japanese. Not sure why, but on my #Gentoo box, #Fluxbox does not show Japanese in the title bar.

On a completely unrelated note, I think imma try this #Niri #WindowManager I keep hearing about. Gonna throw the Niri version of #PikaOS on my laptop and dive straight into deep end.

Oh, have I told y'all that The Owlbear is running PikaOS on their gaming computer? And is rather liking it? I know, the Owlbear running #Debian based #Linux. I'm as surprised as anyone.

(FTR before anyone jumps on me, I have absolutely nothing against Debian, and in fact recognize it as possibility the most important of the major distributions; any and all shots I make at Debian are jokes.)

As a long-time #AwesomeWM and #River user on #Linux, I started a project called #AeroTag to extend #AeroSpace.

I’m super happy with the result. With this, I feel like I can finally live comfortably in the Mac world! ☺️

@sysedit @tfb +1 for AwesomeWM, because it is awesome :-)
It has a rich enough library of widgets and other things, allowing to construct that user want — from usual WM with windows (default settings) to tiling WM.
It is like StumpWM, but with some batteries included (or maybe I'm just suck with Common Lisp, lol).

#AwesomeWM #WindowManager

Screenshot of AwesomeWM in tiling mode with mainbar on the left, Emacs frame opened (with ~/.profile contents in buffer) and Rofi menu to launch applications on the right side.
Everything is using Solarized Light color theme and a blue color (from the same theme) as an accent. Icons on the menu bar and on the Rofi menu are from Haiku. Menubar and Rofi using the texture of paper as a background.Screenshot of qBittorrent opened in the AwesomeWM. Used Qt theme is customized Windows-style theme with Solarized colors. There is a window (with blue titlebar) from qBittorent to paste magnet links to download.
The menubar on the left using paper texture as a background.Xterm frame opened in the AwesomeWM. There is a fastfetch output in the console, displaying FreeBSD daemon ASCII art and hardware of the Thinkpad X220.
Fastfetch lists used fonts (Trebuchet MS size 9), icons (Haiku) and theme in GTK 2/3, Qt applications (Solarized Light).
