Help :)
Being a FreeBSD/Linux sysadmin for ages, I’ve spent most of my life using those OSes headless (them, not me) on the server side and macOS on the desktop side.
Now that I want to try and get a proper FreeBSD desktop I’m facing a whole new field of knowledge I don’t have (yet).
Is there a good and comprehensive resource that explains layer after layer the structure of a full desktop cake?
What’s the «Desktop» role (ex. LXQT), what’s the «Window Manager» role (ex. XFWM4), what’s the «Graphics Platform» role (ex. X11) and how do they plug/interact, how do one chooses the layers for one’s desktop cake, etc. ?
Where does the login part comes into play? What’s the difference between X11 and Xorg? Can you mix & match anything?
