#VCVrack

I'm trying to take a small break from stupid self-employed office duties and renovating the house.

I like what I hear from my experiment of using #VCVrack as a #DAW replacement and #vst host and going 100% software #synthesizer. A thing which I wouldn't do regularly. And there's issues with the performance, since #VCV only works on one thread of my 16-core machine, otherwise it's getting terribly out of sync.

So I am considering doing a video with this. However, I notice it's gear talk, it's musician's music… people usually don't care as much about my music as they do about equipment. Especially on #YouTube, not so much on #PeerTube / #MakerTube. Which is not like entirely bad, but still it gives me mixed feelings.

Luckily I got #OBS back up and running for dual screen and audio recording and plenty of CPU cores left for video encoding.

Both of those features probably would benefit from using SIMD techniques. Alas, my modules are designed on the assumption that they accept only one signal per input port. And I’m not sure how much performance would suffer if I handled aliasing via oversampling and filtering.

I think either feature would require significant redesign. In C++11. Bleah.

There are a few cross-cutting features that I think people would like. First is support for multi-channel signals. In fact I got a request for that recently.

The other is anti-aliasing. Because I have no DSP skill, and have tried and failed several times to understand the math behind DSP, all of my modules have focused solely on control signals, not audio signals. But I think some of my modules would be interesting at audio rate… if they did not suffer from aliasing.

My VCV Rack plugin project, DHE-Modules (library.vcvrack.com/?page=1&li), has been dormant for a few years, mostly because I got tired of writing C++ in general (again), and C++11 in particular.

There's nothing quite like building a fun little patch to keep the anxious thoughts away on a record-breaking cold day! This one was born entirely in #vcvRack with no DAW this time.

A VCV Rack screenshot showing many modules with knobs and patch points. Sound sources include a typical oscillator triangle wave, a Bifaco Noise Plethora and a four-slot sampler. There is an AirWindows CrunchCoat reverb, two mixers and lots of LFOs. There is also a Bifaco Rampage and a Bernuli gate.

Noise Therapy: Session 102

Playing with feedback in VCV Rack again. The patch is available on my website, link in video description. Only free modules were used.

i do think #vcvrack ought to have a feature constantly updating like the cpu load thing in the menu bar where it tells you how much money your patch would cost if you had all those modules in physical.

one fun little idea i had is finding cool little set-ups on modulargrid.net and setting up an equivalent on #vcvrack, and messing around with that.

haven't tried it yet. anyone know of some neat skiffs on there that you think would be fun for this?

why physical modular is probably not gonna ever be the right thing for me, example #1312:
i just used like 13 modules to make this horrid sound that i then lowered the volume of so that you can just barely hear it.
that shitty little sound would cost like $3000 in physical.

This preview of the upcoming #Venom #VCVRack #Venjolin (#Benjolin Dave Benjamin, AKA Venom style) preview is very, very interesting. Could be #BonkWave or even #NotBonkWave

just did some minor punching up of my starting template for #vcvrack

the Clocked module and the Phasor Generator module are redundant, i'll usually end up deleting one, depending on how i build a given patch.

a screenshot of a vcv rack template patch. it's got some clocking options, some interwired LFOs, a quantizer, an eq, some compressors, mixer and aux send router, midi control modules, recorder, scope, audio routing, mid/side processing going to tape and analogue coloration, with a bit of stereo expansion.
