I was already aware from its earlier announcement that the #SideGallery wasn’t reopening its former physical premises at Side, #Newcastle. But still, the sight of this does rather cement it 😭

(In all seriousness, best of luck to the business now based here… it’s a wonderful space 👌)

This building also boasted a rather spiffing sundial, which was making the most of the fine afternoon weather flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_g

I do like a sundial. More awkward to carry than a watch, though.

This empty lot used to be the famous Kard Bar (Cross Street Newcastle upon Tyne). On December 1st 2015 the building burned down, tragically taking the life of Brian Sandells the owner.

Mastodonians of North East England…

Bit of a long shot…

If you know a Young Reader (16+) who’d be interested in being a Beta Reader for my latest novel, please get in touch.

I’ll send them a printed copy when it’s out, and credit them.

For context, it’s about a pair of teenagers in North Shields.

The #Transport Research Laboratory evaluated low-floor bus trials in #London and North #Tyneside, aimed at improving access for mobility-impaired passengers, wheelchair users, elderly, and parents with pushchairs. These buses feature no entrance steps and ramps to bridge gaps, easing boarding and alighting. Between 1994 and 1995, 68 buses were trialled in London and six in North Tyneside, with infrastructure improvements like raised kerbs and better signage supporting the trials. Surveys and video analysis showed low-floor buses increased accessibility and passenger satisfaction, especially among disabled and pushchair users, with modest increases in patronage. While operating costs were slightly higher, benefits included shorter boarding times for some users and greater independence for wheelchair passengers.

The image is a page from a report, featuring academic text laid out in a two-column format. The main headings are "1 Introduction" and "2 The trials," with subheadings such as "1.1 Background," "1.2 The trial programme," "1.3 Monitoring," and "2.1 The vehicles." The page contains dense text concerning bus services in Great Britain, specifically regarding accessibility and low-floor bus trials. Various topics are discussed, including the challenges of high bus steps for people with mobility difficulties, the rationale for low-floor buses, and the specific vehicle models used in trials. The text is structured with bullet points, discussing the characteristics and impacts of these trials. The background is plain white, and the text is predominantly in a serif font, with certain sections emboldened for emphasis. The image contains two technical drawings of low-floor buses. The upper section is labelled "Figure 1" and depicts a two-door low-floor bus from London. The drawing includes a top view and a side view, showing seating arrangements and specific measurements. The top view displays rows of seats with aisle space, while the side view illustrates seating with designated wheelchair spaces. Dimensions are marked throughout the drawing, indicating overall bus length and seat spacing.

The lower section is labelled "Figure 2" and illustrates a one-door low-floor bus from North Tyneside. Similar to the first figure, it consists of a top view and side view. The top view highlights the seat layout and aisle, whereas the side view shows seating, including a space for a wheelchair. Detailed measurements are included to specify the dimensions of different sections of the bus.The image consists of two black-and-white photographs depicting the wheelchair spaces in buses from two different locations. The top image, labelled "Figure 5a," shows the wheelchair space on a bus in North Tyneside. The space is positioned near the front of the bus with outward-facing seats and is empty, highlighting the infrastructure. The lower image, labelled "Figure 5b," displays a filled wheelchair space on a bus in London. It shows two passengers; one in a wheelchair and another sitting opposite them with a pushchair nearby. The bus interior includes poles, seats with patterned upholstery, and large windows revealing an urban environment outside. The image consists of a table and two maps illustrating trial low-floor bus services. The table titled "Table 1 Trial low-floor bus services" includes five columns: Route number, Operator, Route, Service frequency, and Date of introduction. It lists five bus routes operated by different companies, including their service details.

Below the table are two figures. Figure 7 depicts London routes with a simple map showing routes 120, 222, 186, 144, and 101 running through various locations such as Hounslow, Uxbridge, Harrow, and North Woolwich. A prominent River Thames curve is depicted near the bus routes.

Figure 8 illustrates Route 325/326 in Tyne & Wear. It is a map with a curved pathway showing route loops from North Shields through Whitley Bay to Tynemouth.

An ancient wooden jetty at the mouth of the River Tyne in North East England. Thinking about how I would have processed this image in the darkroom back in the day. Choosing the right contrast printing paper, with a bit of 'dodging' and 'burning in' – you had to be there!
Loved the 'old school' photography processes (which I once thought would never be beaten by this digital malarky), but the truth is, I could never go back to sloshing chemicals about to create an image!

The sun will rise in #Tyneside #England tomorrow. And it will set. And rise and set the day after, and the day after that, for more days than you or I will have the chance to watch. But this account will not be noting them all.

Let's all hope—and work—for a brighter future.
