@devlin It's in my 2600+ on this very desk as I type...

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Defender" - #Atari2600

Much-maligned port of the Williams arcade classic, and it's easy to see why, although TBH I found it a lot more playable this time. That might be due in part to a nice, clear, stable image on my 2600+!

"Defender II" ("Stargate") surpassed this in every way and showed the system off much better. But this would still have been preferable to not having "Defender" at home at all, which was my situation in 1982.

#RetroGaming #Atari #80s

Play screen from the videogame "Defender" on Atari 2600. Purple aliens float in the grey sky above a yellow city. One lone orange spaceship rises to challenge them. And frankly, even if you could see this image clearly, your imagination would only have to do 10% less work...

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Frogger" - #Intellivision & "Frogger II: Threedeep" - #Atari2600

Both original carts are new additions to my library, and in the latter case an entirely new game to me. I'm reassuringly still crap at the original, though. It got a very decent port to Atari and this INTV one is not bad either. Small black mark for the much-too-slow jingle 🎶 - would honestly have been better not to bother. But that's nit-picking; it's "Frogger", it's all good!

#RetroGaming #ParkerBros

"Frogger" on Intellivision.

A pixellated top-down view of a roadway and a river, with vehicles and critters aplenty. The vintage CRT screen has an orange casing."Frogger II: Threedeep" for Atari 2600 (actually playing on a 7800). Multiple levels of critters scroll left and right on (under?) a river. There's even a submarine... The Orange CRT screen is the same as before.

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Space Invaders" - Super Famicom.

45 years of practice and I still think anything over 2000 points is a decent score. Some things really don't get old.

#RetroGaming #Nintendo #Arcade

"Space Invaders" playing on a Super Famicom (Japanese SNES) console. The TV screen sits on a work unit with various other consoles visible. The foreground is dominated by a "Scoremaster" arcade joystick controller with bright green, red, yellow and blue buttons.

I've gone down in a hail of lead - again. But at least it looks like my partner got lucky...

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Crime Patrol" on #Sega #MegaCD.

#RetroGaming #Lightgun

CRT TV screen showing a still from the MegaCD (Sega CD) FMV videogame "Crime Patrol".

In the foreground, the barrel of a "Justifier" lightgun points at the screen from our perspective.

An undercover cop with an outrageous 90s moustache is being comforted (?) by a nightclub dancer. He is comically over-emoting at something we can't see. Judging from his eyeline, it could be our dead body...

The MegaCD unit is not in shot, but other consoles (NES, SNES) are visible.

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Astroblast / Astrosmash" - #Atari2600 and #Intellivision.

The original Intellivision version is graphically more interesting, but the Atari's paddle controllers make the game a lot easier to play. That - and the composite video mod that someone competent fit to this Atari being a LOT clearer than the one I bodged myself on the Intellivision - make this a flukey away win for Team Sunnyvale.

Rocks fall from space onto a range of mountains in fractionally more convincing fashion than on the Atari. The "peak score" is displayed at 6,870pts. #TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Pole Position" - #Vectrex

Actually, I'd never played it on Vectrex before; new platform, but familiar results!

#RetroGaming

Gameplay screen: "Pole Position" on MB Vectrex. A wireframe racing car has come to a stop on a wireframe road in the shadow of a wireframe mountain. The horizon reads "Game Over"...

I was a big fan of #Gauntlet in the arcade, but coming as late as 1987 meant this #ZXSpectrum port entirely passed me by at the time.

A shame, as it turns out it's pretty good. It would be an understatement to say that the Speccie's record with arcade ports was not exactly a litany of triumph, so this stands out as very playable and - crucially - RECOGNIZABLE analog of the original experience.

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt it, though. "Blue Valkyrie... is about to die..."

#RetroGaming #80s

Gameplay screen; "Gauntlet" on ZX Spectrum.

A top-down view of a maze of blue walls. A Valkyrie battles ghosts and "grunts" while collecting treasure chests, food, and keys to open more doors...

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Lethal Enforcers" - #SEGA #Megadrive

Finally bodged together a station where all (well... some) of my lightguns can do their thing. Shooty shooty bang bangz...

No! Wait!

Do not adjust your equipment. This is legit. I actually completed the course in #OutRun!

I'm 95% sure that this has never happened before, in nearly 40 years of trying, on countless platforms...

Is the #GameBoyAdvance "#SEGA Arcade Classics" version famously easy? Because this was my first attempt. Something's not right here!

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Rip-Off" - #Vectrex

I've owned this game as long as the machine but it's aeons since I played it. This is the new(ish) rotary control-enabled version, part of the compilation "Spin Cart 2" from Binary Star Software.

A spinner does indeed make things easier... but not that much!

#RetroGaming #Vector #80s

Gameplay - "Rip-Off" on MB Vectrex. A blue spaceship orbits a yellow/green hexagonal "planet". (Actually white vector graphics viewed through a coloured plastic filter...)

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Cannon Fodder" - #SNES

Although perhaps getting less crap, since a friend @yesterzine let me in on the little secret that this version works with a mouse. After five minutes of rummaging, I was in business.

Note the "surfboard" thigh-mounted mousemat, comfortably pushing the SNES itself into second place on the "Most #90s Thing In This Photo" hiscore table.

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Asteroids", although strictly speaking I'd never played the #Atari 8-Bit version before, so maybe 12590pts is not THAT crap?

Look at that packaging, though. Overkill much? Yes, but sooo pretty... 😍
