"The image shows a small tufted titmouse perched on a slender tree branch, its body angled slightly as if it has just paused mid‑movement. The bird’s most striking feature—its soft gray crest—rises into a neat little peak atop its head, giving it an alert, almost inquisitive expression. Its eyes are dark and round, bright with curiosity, set against a pale face that makes them stand out like polished beads.

The titmouse’s back and wings are a smooth grayish‑blue, the color shifting subtly with the light. Along its sides, a warm wash of rusty orange glows softly, blending into the clean white of its underparts. The feathers look fine and delicate, each one lying neatly against the next, giving the bird a tidy, well‑kept appearance.

A vertical branch in the foreground partially obscures the bird, creating a sense of depth—as if the viewer is peeking through the trees to catch a glimpse of this quick, lively creature. The background is a blur of muted browns and soft greens, the out‑of‑focus shapes of branches and woodland giving the scene a quiet, natural atmosphere. The titmouse appears alert but calm, as though listening for the next rustle of leaves or distant call.

The overall mood is intimate and serene: a small woodland bird caught in a moment of stillness amid the branches." - Microsoft Copilot

Vocal, Active, Acrobatic. Three words that nicely capture the Tufted Titmouse. Sadly, the last of the Paridae that I have in my photo Library. These are lowland birds, that are common in the eastern half of US. Fun to watch and work with as you hike around the trails in the woods. They will follow along, talking to you as they forage for food - mostly insects (amazing to see them take on a spider) but will also eat nuts and seed. Common in our area, and a common visitor to our feeders.

Volunteer workday today. Not sure what we will be doing so will load up most of the tools. Tuesday nearly finished me off, so hopefully something a little lighter today.

Small gray bird - gray wings and upper body, the underpants are mostly light grey, but with light tan sides. The crest is gray, land the cheeks are lighter grey. The eyes are black as is the short bill and the lores. The bird has a large acorn (almost too large to hold) that it will crack by repeated pounding with its beak. They will take peanuts as well.

Titmouse at Attention

This Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) is perched atop my old bird feeder, the one I kept going for more than twenty years. I patched and repaired it countless times until it finally gave out not long ago.

"A Tufted Titmouse stands poised on a weathered wooden beam, its small body full of alert energy. The bird’s soft gray crest rises like a tiny plume, giving it a dignified silhouette despite its size. Its dark, round eye gleams with curiosity, set in a pale face that makes the expression even more striking. The feathers along its back are a smooth bluish‑gray, shifting gently into the warm buff tones along its sides and the clean white of its underside.

The Titmouse grips the wood with delicate feet, the grain and old nail heads beneath it adding a rugged texture that contrasts with the bird’s neat, refined plumage. Behind it stretches a deep, velvety green background—simple, uncluttered, and perfectly chosen to make the bird stand out as if illuminated. Every detail feels crisp: the curve of the crest, the fine lines of the feathers, the sense that the bird might flick its wings or call out at any moment.

The whole image captures a moment of quiet readiness, a small creature balanced between stillness and motion." - Microsoft Copilot

Tufted Titmouse, A Crest Above the Rest

One afternoon, while sitting in the backyard with my dog Charlie, I spotted a Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) perched nearby.

"A Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) perches with quiet poise on a slender tree branch, its small frame alert and balanced. The bird’s soft gray upperparts blend gently into the muted tones of the bark, while its white underbelly glows faintly in the filtered light. A subtle wash of orange graces its flanks like a whispered accent. Its most striking feature—the crest—rises like a delicate plume, giving the bird a dignified silhouette. A dark eye, round and gleaming, anchors its expression, framed by a faint black arc that curves across its face like a thoughtful brushstroke. The feathers are smooth and neatly layered, catching the light in soft gradients. Behind the bird, the background blurs into a gentle wash of greens and browns, allowing the Titmouse to stand in crisp relief—an emblem of stillness and attentiveness in the forest’s quiet theater." - Microsoft Copilot

Feathered Crown

This tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) showed up one quiet morning. These birds rarely pause long enough for a photo—you almost have to anticipate their landing before they arrive. In this case, I got lucky. I was photographing dozens of small birds when one happened to be this crested visitor.

"Perched gracefully on a slender, leafless branch, the tufted titmouse commands quiet attention. Its small, compact body is cloaked in soft gray-blue feathers that shimmer faintly in the light, like morning mist on slate. A delicate crest rises from its head—a feathery crown that gives the bird a noble, alert bearing. Its underparts are a gentle white, with a subtle wash of warm orange along the flanks, like the blush of a winter sunrise.

The bird’s dark, round eyes gleam with curiosity and intelligence, set against its pale face like polished obsidian. Its short, black beak is neat and pointed, perfect for cracking seeds or calling out in sharp, whistled notes. The branch it rests on is textured and bare, a quiet stage for this feathered performer.

Behind the bird, the background fades into a soft blur of muted browns and grays, allowing the titmouse to stand out in crisp detail. The photograph captures not just the bird’s form, but its presence—alert, serene, and sovereign in its woodland perch.

Good morning. ☕☕☕

23 December 2025

I remember decades ago, when I was just getting started — stationed overseas with the Army, no car, no easy way to get around. What we did have was the Sears catalog. I think they sent it out once a year, the way phone books used to arrive like clockwork. It was as thick as the phonebook of a major city, a brick of possibility. In a way, it was the 20th‑century version of Amazon. You could order almost anything by mail, though the process was much slower. Living overseas, it could take weeks for something to arrive.

We’d flip through the catalog and daydream about what we might buy. I remember lingering over the idea of a bicycle with a moped-style motor. I never went through with it — even that modest machine would have taken a big bite out of the little money I had. But at the time, the idea felt practical, even sensible. Looking back now, it feels more like a youthful fantasy of mobility and independence.

These days, electric bikes are everywhere. And I think: what a cool idea — an electric bicycle. In some cities you see them lined up along the street, ready for use. I’m not entirely sure how the system works; I assume you rent them. If I were younger, I might be tempted to buy one myself.

Sometimes I wonder whether we’ll eventually see electric bicycle races — big arena events, something like the Indy 500 or NASCAR, with riders in bright suits and helmets, ready for a high-speed electric sprint. Maybe such races already exist and just haven’t hit the mainstream yet. Who knows — the WPEB, the World Professional Electric Bicycling league, might one day be a real thing.

“Long before Amazon trucks rumbled down our hollers, Christmas arrived in a much quieter way — tucked in the mailbox… It was the Sears Christmas Wish Book. That catalog didn’t just show things. It showed possibility.” - Newsbreak

Feather and Grain

"Perched with quiet poise on a weathered wooden ledge, a Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) gazes outward, its delicate form sharply etched against a velvety green backdrop. The bird’s soft gray plumage blends seamlessly into its surroundings, yet its presence is unmistakable—marked by a perky crest that rises like a ceremonial plume atop its head. Its underparts are pale, almost silvery, with a subtle warmth near the flanks, hinting at peach tones. The eyes are large, dark, and glistening—alert yet gentle—framed by a faint facial mask that adds a touch of mystery.

The wooden structure beneath it, likely part of a feeder or birdhouse, bears the marks of time: cracked grain, softened edges, and a patina of age that complements the bird’s natural elegance. Light falls softly across the scene, illuminating the fine texture of feathers and the rugged wood alike, as if nature itself were offering a quiet benediction. The background—a smooth, rich green—renders the Titmouse in near-iconic relief, like a sovereign emblem of winter’s stillness and woodland grace.

Signed “© Swede’s Photographs” in the top left, the image carries both artistic reverence and documentary clarity, capturing not just a bird, but a moment of dignified stillness in the wild." - Microsoft Copilot

Two tufted titmice in flight. One tuftie is just taking off, its wings spread wide but its toes are still in contact with the branch. That's great split-second timing! The photographer is Mark Olsen.

On the right, the second bird has completely left its branch. Love those curled-up toes! The photographer is Jeff Rosenberg.

Note that with both birds, their crests are plastered down on their heads so they're aerodynamically rounded and don't have have the characteristic "cone" shape. While some tufties do fly with their crests partially up, more often, they use their pointy heads as communication and aggression signals to other birds: "Leave my food alone!" "The exit from my territory's that way!" or "What is this strange thing I'm looking at?!" which is sometimes done when encountering a camera lens on a feeder. Normally, tufties are cheerful and social little birds, but when the crest very sharply goes way up, it can be a way of signaling irritation.

Again, photographer on the left is Mark Olsen. Photographer on the right is Jeff Rosenberg.

The bird is soft grey on its head, face, back, wings, and tail, while its breast is creamy white and there are touches of peach on its sides toward the back. It has black feathers just above its short black beak, and its eyes are large and luminous black.

Its crest is flattened down on its head rather than sticking up in its characteristic "cone" shape.

Speaking of tufted titmice being aggressive... check out this pair of them fighting in midair! On the bird to the left, those little feet don't look so little anymore. Man, those talons!! 😱

A pair of tufted titmice are having a fight in midair, perhaps territorial or over a food source. Their squabble is surprisingly beautiful to look at. The bird on the left has its grey wings spread wide, as well as the tail, which seems to function as an air brake. Its breast is white with touches of peach at the side, and its beak is wide open. What's really amazing are its toes and talons, which are much larger and more threatening than we see in a calm titmouse.

The bird on the right is seen from the back, totally grey with its wings fanned wide. It seems its opponent is getting the upper hand (or wing) in the fight.

I posted this a while back, but it's time to post it again. Everyone needs a laugh. 🤣

We're used to seeing that sweet little conehead, the tufted titmouse, with its crest raised, but often don't realize it can raise it as a form of aggression. This one is pissed off at a camera for intruding into its lunch plate.

A little tufted titmouse perches on a bare branch, facing the camera with its head tilted. It seems curious, as though wondering what the camera is doing there. Its head, crest, back, wings, and tail are a soft grey color, while its breast is white with touches of peach on the sides. Its short beak is black, with a patch of black feathers just above it, and the eyes are large, black, and luminous.
