When I was testing something with #SimCity 2000's traffic routing I was thinking: "I wish there was a OpenTTD or OpenRCT2 of SimCity 2000"

There is actually a project that has started the work!

Current releases have focused on patching SimCity 2000 SE to run on modern (Windows) systems, and adding a modding API, but the first parts of the game have been reverse engineered and reimplemented in C++. Very cool!

Several of my favorite video game genres are actually really terrible in a lot of insidious ways.

Like, every single game descended from Civilization seems content to perpetuate eurocentric models of history and force nationalistic and capitalistic structures onto fucking everything. It both lacks imagination in terms of what could be and lacks descriptive power of what has actually been.

Or every single city builder uses a child's understanding of how development and demographics work. I've never seen one that, for example, allows for the existence of truly rural people. Or even on the other end, do any of them allow for high density mixed use buildings? Do any of them allow for the types of transportation paradigms that are common in east Asia? As far as I've seen they're all entrenched in American one-car-per-adult insanity and just bolt mass transit on as an afterthought.

It's really pretty pathetic, tbh. We need to hold game makers to a higher standard and stop pretending it's the early 80s and the best we can get is what a couple of STEM nerds imagine the world is like.

I never had the chance to play the original SimTower but this modern spiritual successor is pretty fun so far. Feels like it'll end up being a nice game to relax to, much like Cities Skylines is (as were the original SimCity games).
