More progress with the model railway signals.

I designed a mount for the Train-Tech range of OO scale signals. The top surface is a perfect match for the signal base, then there’s a 12mm diameter plug that goes into the baseboard. Underneath is a stem to which I can tie-wrap a flat cable, making it immobile.

Install the signal on top, it’s a snug push fit. Then fix the cable in place and solder it to the terminals on the signal.

What we end up with is a very solid baseboard mount for the signal, together with a cable that has been immobilised to ensure reliability.

The 3D printed signal mount sitting on my desk

A two aspect distant signal, installed on the 3D printed mount. It’s a snug fit, no glue necessary.

This image shows the assembled signal with the flat cable zip tied in place and soldered to the signal terminals

The signal is installed at the top of the helix, currently on green.

One ground signal wired in, with a basic rule set up so that it is red when the point is thrown. Five to go!

The rules will be extended so that the ground signals only activate when shunting is taking place - I’m going to use some physical switches connected to an accessory decoder to indicate this on a per-platform basis (or per-corner of the station, not quite decided yet)

The 3D printer is working again and the first platform is getting longer! Sadly the platform surface colour varies a lot, but this won’t be as noticeable once the canopies have been installed.

Equally importantly I’m hoping to get some ground signals lit up and working tomorrow, and maybe even a three aspect signal on the new platform. Pics will follow, obvs.

I may, or may not, have just ordered some Train Tech three aspect signal kits for my layout. I like their accuracy BUT you can’t buy them pre-assembled, and they are fiddly, even if you manage to get the parts off the sprue without breaking them.

The GOAT in this area of the hobby is Absolute Aspects, but I’m not that rich. #ModelRailway #OOScale #Signalling

today i learned that german LZB train control uses same 56khz inductive RF link as skytrain’s SelTrac system. the two systems seem really similar in many ways, like LZB is a cab signalling system whereas SelTrac is full driverless automatic. but maybe they have common heritage in the Standard Elektrik Lorenz. SelTrac was originally a german invention before UTDC and Alcatel took over here in Canada.

can any German railfans fill me in on this?
