"Cherry red , sweeter than the honeycomb..." Hellebores providing more color joy in winter-almost-spring
(That line is from the BeeGees song)

A large cluster of dark cherry red hellebore flowers show off yellow anthers, red pistils and green nectarines. The contrasts are very vivid. The leaves are palmate and dark green. There are some dark green low shrubs in the back ground.

Bad bunny show
I couldn't resist, and I'll bet the gardener couldn't either because the bunny was moved recently.

A jazzy frog statuette combo tootles in a front yard; frog musicians line up on a bench stage to play: a drummer, a vocalists, a fiddler two tombonists and another drummer. Two frogs at the end of the stage are dancing. Meanwhile, a friendly realistic rabbit statuette sits in the grass in front, leading the band?

A couple of plain pink camellias blossoms, with layers of ruffle petals, glow amid the dark green glossy leaves. Blue sky shows a bit between the leaves.

For some reason I am not fond of this color, it looks almost plastic to me, but if the light and angle are right, you can see a faint golden glow at the flower heart that redeems it from Barbie World.

Spring yellows brighten a late winter day, with a burst of witch hazel and daffodils
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleWinter #OurNeighborhood #MapleLeafNeighborhood #BloomScrolling #Daffodils #WitchHazel #Yellows

A row of bright yellow daffodils stand tall at the top of a sidewalk wall. The gray stone wall is retaining a flower border along the sidewalk, with a taller mossy wall behind it. There is a bare orange branched shrub next to the daffodils, providing seasonal contrasts.A branch of a shrubby witch hazel is bare except for clusters of flowers. The flowers look a bit like spiders with wild, curly yellow legs.

Crocus bonanza
Crocuses are busy blooming in lawns, peeking out from leaves, being fresh and telling us spring is near
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleWinter #OurNeighborhood #MapleLeafNeighborhood #BloomScrolling #SeattleSpring

A variety of very tiny crocus blossoms dot this border, in colors ranging from pale yellow to pale pink to shades of blue and purple. The border is full of emerging green plants. It is carpeted with green moss. There are a few dry brown leaves as well, to remind us of seasons past.A burst of traditional lavender and purple crocuses pop up around the grassy lawn. The bright orange anthers provide a vivid pop of color. Dried brown Japanese maple leaves are sprinkled throughout. Two bright yellow crocuses pop up amid a display of velvety looking orangey pink heuchera leaves. The heuchera leaves are rounded and nicely veined. Mossy rocks trim the border. The color contrasts are interesting.

I saw my first honeybee of the season, busily gathering pollen from blooming hazelnut trees (not the natives, which are still thinking about spring).

Male catkins are ready for business. A small cluster of yellow hazelnut catkins is in the foreground, with its flowers open and full of pollen. A bee can be seen at the bottom of one catkins, gathering pollen with vigor.Female hazelnut flowers are open too! Here five tiny blooms are open at the base of a cluster of male catkins. You can see the tiny immature nut which forms the base of the flower, and the little bright red pistils sticking out at the top.

Neighborhood stuff
1. A great blue heron? 2. I dunno what this was about, but OK, then. 3. A seasonally painted erstwhile Halloween pumpkin now full of love... but that troll is still there!
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleWinter #OurNeighborhood #YardArt #MapleLeafNeighborhood

A yard decoration made with a blue shovel, with green rake heads for wings, a yellow pitchfork head for tail, red pipes for legs, and googly eyes attached at the top of the shovel looks like a fanciful take on a great blue heron. Imagination required! The yard has a neat low blue green fence, with a magnolia growing in the corner. It's a colorful scene.A sign runs along a chicken wire fence, with pink lettering spelling out "NO MANSPLAINING GUARANTEE". The NO is underlined twice. I wonder if there is a sad story behind this?A decorative pumpkin gnome house (material unknown), which had previously been used as part of a Halloween scene, is now painted bright red. Its walls are covered with little hand painted hearts in white and blue and pink. There is a small blue gnome in front of the house door. There is a toothy troll under the painted window. At the top is what I suppose is a leprechaun with a green hat, in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day.

Trouvailles
from a walk in the park, a silvery lichen and a burst of colors, from a broken madrone tree
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleWinter #SeattleParks #RavennaPark #ColorScrolling #Lichen #LichenSubscribe

A silvery fruticose Evernia lichen species on a branch: the lichen is relatively large, and very branching. It is mostly a silvery gray color, with some powdery green fronds. The lichen is growing on a mossy branch. Everything is very moist and green due to the current weather.A broken chunk of a large madrone (Arbutus menziesii) has fallen to the ground after a windstorm. The branch wood shows the richness of the madrone wood colors: to the right is a dark, almost black area (possibly disease damage) and then you can see the grainy wood flowing to the left, with shades ranging from a deep orange red heart to a pale tan at layer at the edges. There are a couple ofknots, with convolutions in the grain, like a swirl in a stream. The branch is resting on a bed of dead leaves.

Several large but unhealthy madrone trees fell this winter. The park rangers have been removing them from the trails, and cutting some down, but the litter usually gets left in place, providing shelter for critters and an insight into the decomposition process. It is untidy and sometimes jarring, but the parks department tries to follow nature as much as possible in the trail system.

And now for something completely different.
Why is this brass duck head nailed to the fence? Who knows?

Went to check the analemmatic sundial at Uprep HS, and it works very well in winter! This is at high noon (the sun is still winter low)
#Photography #SeattleWashington #SeattleWinter #AnalemmaticSundial #UPrep #Sundials

This photo is of a analemmatic type of sundial in the front of the UPrep High School central building in Wedgwood Neighborhood. The design is described below. The sundial is an iron gray cylinder with stainless steel lettering, indicating the hour of the day along the sides. Stainless steel lettering also designate the lines for the winter equinox at the top, both solstices at the middle and summer equinox at the bottom. There is a handle at the bottom, about waist height, to move the gnomon so that the sunlight can strike its slit and fall on the correct hour of the day.

The sundial is oddly attractive, looking a bit like a welded futuristic rough idea of a robotic Dakek.
( The followin is from https://sundials.org/index.php/sundial-registry/onedial/746) A unique, 10 foot tall, 2 foot diameter (base) tapered cylinder dial similar to a traditional shepherd's dial except that the cylinder orientation is fixed and the gnomon is rotated about the dial axis by the user to align with the sun. Time is read from the vertical hour and date lines. The dial is fabricated from bronze plate and is hollow. Lines are formed by individually cut hour and date line segments welded on from inside the cylinder. A lever at hand height is moved to rotate the gnomon to face the sun, providing a vertical shadow. A slit in the gnomon tip provides a more accurate sun spot on the dial face.
