If you are still an EFA member you need to check in on your Facebook uncle. Because this is embarrassing.

Friends of EFA,
https://www.australiansforaisafety.com.au/, recently published a new expert report revealing the risks from general-purpose AI models.

The AI Legislation Stress Test drew on 64 experts in AI and public policy from top universities, law firms and AI labs. “The key takeaway from the report is that no regulator is addressing the risks of general-purpose AI, and many of those risks are serious,” said Greg Sadler, the report’s lead author.

Our 2 key takeaways:

The vast majority of experts found current laws inadequate across all five AI threats they evaluated and that 4 of the 5 AI threats they assessed were a “realistic probability” or “likely” to lead to harm in Australia within the next 5 years.

And on that note, a reminder to Australian citizens and residents that messages (SMS/email) from myGov, Services Australia, and the Australian Taxation Office generally do not include hyperlinks, and if phone numbers are used they are publicly listed numbers.

Anti-scam awareness traditionally emphasised literacy-biased indicators like spelling and grammar; and IT literacy-biased indicators like checking email addresses and other data.

AI exploitation by scammers reinforces why systematic/organisational policies like ‘No hyperlink’ ’No reply’ ’No ph number’ approaches to customer contact are more effective and reliable.

Hey, quick note to everyone. If you get a random message from 'Mawa' or someone from Kakuma Refugee Camp, you should know that there's a 95% chance it's a scam. They will repeatedly talk about injustices and horrible things happening and then they will push their GoFundMe on you unrelentingly.

They were outright banned from various different LGBTQ+ subreddits because they were found to be scamming. Nothing they said about them personally could be corroborated and they were often using outdated news or news articles that couldn't be verified. I am sure there are awful things happening in refugee camps but these pushes are not even remotely close to legitimate.

They also typically operate by sending you private messages, asking you to help and then pushing that gofundme on you. You'll also be able to spot them because they care more about money than they do about publicity to their cause. Seems sort of counter intuitive when that cause could gain money money through publicity.

This is the second person to message me on Mastodon over this already. They're openly preying on the kindness and generosity of people. Be careful and cautious!
