The fates of the #SAF and #Eritrea are intertwined. Eritrea hosts training camps for SAF-allied militias, now protected by Sudanese aircraft. This naturally risks a further regionalization, not only of the #CivilWar in #Sudan, but also of any future #Ethiopia Eritrea #war, which threat is ever more potent. All the more since the #RSF allege Tigrayan forces (#TPLF) are fighting alongside the SAF since 2024.

#Sudan and #Turkey can also be considered to be fully aligned, and their relations are blooming in all sectors. This has been exemplified symbolically by the twinning of Port-Sudan and Mersin (December). At the political level, a Turkish mediation effort between the #UAE and the #SAF had also been welcome by Burhan (January). Turkish drones and other war material has been essential to the SAF ’s #war effort. The Turkish defence industry has also engaged the #RSF, however.
The extent of the support from older and main backers #Iran and #Turkey grew further in 2025.
The #SAF have continued to receive a large amount of Iranian drones, a major driver to SAF’s resilience. #Sudan and Iran are fully aligned with consequences for the Iran/#Israel proxy #war in the wider region, especially regarding the #Houthis. This proximity to Iran has predictably worried the #US and motivated some of their #sanctions, with probably future policy consequences.
#Egypt, another pro-#SAF but earlier more pragmatic actor, and at the center of several #peace mediation efforts, is another country that became explicit in its support to the SAF in 2024. Egyptian military and intelligence assistance to the SAF has been key since the onset of the #war. It pushes for the international recognition of Burhan’s mock government and #AU reinstatement of #Sudan. Egypt and the SAF are now fully aligned, on all issues, including #Ethiopia ’s #GERD.
In July, #Pakistan — soon after become a Saudi ally (September) — proposed a trilateral agricultural strategic partnership with #SaudiArabia and "Sudan, a testament to the pre-#war importance of Sudanese livestock, sesame and cotton exports to those countries. This was followed by a large contract for delivery of Pakistanese aircraft, drones and armored vehicles to the #SAF. Pakistan also sold aircraft and other war material to #Haftar ’s #LNA however, a major #RSF backer.
Whereas it was — and officially remains — a flagship mediator within the so-called Jeddah process since the opening of hostilities, #SaudiArabia ’s impatience with the #war, which is clearly inimical to its vital interests, combined with a flare up in the geopolitical rivalry with its ally and adversary the #UAE have gained the #SAF a new backer (February-March).
#China ’s strategic partnership (2024) with #Sudan is mainly a consequence of her pan-African policy, while her main concern in the country has been and remains #oil. Nevertheless, Chinese state companies have signed contracts for the delivery of #war material to the #SAF. Tensions have surfaced over the re-export of Chinese drones to the #RSF, however (May 2025).
The military developments at the Libyan, South Sudanese and Ethiopian borders, as well as victories in Central #Sudan early in the year have won over new backers to the #SAF. The capture of the state by the same also means that time works in favour of the SAF at the international level, backing their hollow claim for legitimacy and their branding of the #RSF as rebels.
#US, #UK, #EU, Canadian and Swiss #sanctions have been toughened. (All EU candidate countries — except for Turkey — as well as #EFTA members, #Armenia and #Georgia aligned on EU sanctions.) Notable rationales have been the recognition of the #genocide perpetrated in #Darfur by the #RSF, the use of chemical weapons by the #SAF, but also SAF’s ever-deepening ties with #Iran.
Time works in favour of the #SAF: A summary of 2025
On the #peace front, nothing happened of significance. Prospective mediators such as #Algeria or #Somalia are ignored. #Kenya ’s efforts only draw SAF’s ire. Current mediators are taking sides and lose credibility. Not that any of these processes, whether under #AU #IGAD auspices, through the Quad or at Jeddah, held any hope to begin with. Peace negotiations in #Sudan didn’t collapse — they never even happened.
