The fates of the #SAF and #Eritrea are intertwined. Eritrea hosts training camps for SAF-allied militias, now protected by Sudanese aircraft. This naturally risks a further regionalization, not only of the #CivilWar in #Sudan, but also of any future #Ethiopia Eritrea #war, which threat is ever more potent. All the more since the #RSF allege Tigrayan forces (#TPLF) are fighting alongside the SAF since 2024.

#Sudan and #Turkey can also be considered to be fully aligned, and their relations are blooming in all sectors. This has been exemplified symbolically by the twinning of Port-Sudan and Mersin (December). At the political level, a Turkish mediation effort between the #UAE and the #SAF had also been welcome by Burhan (January). Turkish drones and other war material has been essential to the SAF ’s #war effort. The Turkish defence industry has also engaged the #RSF, however.
In July, #Pakistan — soon after become a Saudi ally (September) — proposed a trilateral agricultural strategic partnership with #SaudiArabia and "Sudan, a testament to the pre-#war importance of Sudanese livestock, sesame and cotton exports to those countries. This was followed by a large contract for delivery of Pakistanese aircraft, drones and armored vehicles to the #SAF. Pakistan also sold aircraft and other war material to #Haftar ’s #LNA however, a major #RSF backer.
#China ’s strategic partnership (2024) with #Sudan is mainly a consequence of her pan-African policy, while her main concern in the country has been and remains #oil. Nevertheless, Chinese state companies have signed contracts for the delivery of #war material to the #SAF. Tensions have surfaced over the re-export of Chinese drones to the #RSF, however (May 2025).
The military developments at the Libyan, South Sudanese and Ethiopian borders, as well as victories in Central #Sudan early in the year have won over new backers to the #SAF. The capture of the state by the same also means that time works in favour of the SAF at the international level, backing their hollow claim for legitimacy and their branding of the #RSF as rebels.
#US, #UK, #EU, Canadian and Swiss #sanctions have been toughened. (All EU candidate countries — except for Turkey — as well as #EFTA members, #Armenia and #Georgia aligned on EU sanctions.) Notable rationales have been the recognition of the #genocide perpetrated in #Darfur by the #RSF, the use of chemical weapons by the #SAF, but also SAF’s ever-deepening ties with #Iran.
The sourcing on the #RSF base was exceptional (meaning people / organisations chose to share very sensitive stuff with Reuters) and very hard to refute.

The spectacular suspension by #Somalia of all agreements signed with the #UAE (12 January) as well as the latter’s suspected role in mediating #Israel #Somaliland talks should therefore not come as a surprise, especially after the recent revelations on their use of Bosaso (Puntland) to arm #Sudan ’s #RSF (July 2025) and on their exfiltration of #STC ’s leader al Zubaidi through Berbera and Mogadiscio (8 January).
