Pernah mikir gak kenapa susunan keyboard itu QWERTY bukan ABCD? Ternyata alasannya bukan biar kita lambat, tapi karena mesin tik zaman dulu gampang macet. Simak sejarah lengkapnya di sini!

"In the 1890s, the cost of a new, full-size typewriter was more than the average American earned in one month. Index typewriters were a simpler and more affordable alternative. Available at a fraction of the price and manufactured in a variety of designs, they were the earliest portable writing machines. The innovative wheel-index Victor typewriter printed from type attached to the ends of strips arranged in a daisy-wheel pattern, much like the IBM Wheelwriter a century later. 🤓 This is a #nerd post! Just dug up an old #photo of me #flying during my #Diamond #Katana days. 🛩️ And the device I used for #flight #navigation was a #Motorola #PhotonQ 4G LTE. One of those famous #sliders with full #QWERTY #keyboard! ⌨️ Had to solder a #SIM slot into that (was "Sprint" hardwired). And I ran @jolla #SailfishOS on it! 😎 Aaand I used some app like #PoorMaps and piped self-converted #MapTiles into it that I downloaded from #OpenFlightMaps. 🤯 Totally safe though! 😂 #avgeek #aviation

Inflight photo with Motorola PhotonQ sucked to the windscreen of the aircraft, sunset in the background.Stock photo of Motorola PhotonQ. Slided open, keyboard exposed.Done soldering. Ok I brutally ripped of the Sprint chip, and then crudely soldered some wires I had lying around to connect the SIM slot. That's to the right. The slot to the bottom is the SD slot. Next to it where the chip has been.

QWERTY Phones Are Really Trying to Make a Comeback This Year

image via gizmodo.com

After dying a painful death at the hand of the iPhone’s revolutionary capacitive touchscreen, the QWERTY smartphone is rising up from the graveyard this year. Either way, two QWERTY phone announcements in this still very new year suggest there may be some kind of trend. Maybe after 19 years of the iPhone and touchscreens defining the mobile experience, it’s time to go back to the physical keyboard and its more tactile typing.

every now & then i wonder if i should check out dvorak.

then i get real, remember i can't be arsed to do stuff anymore, & slump back into my slough of apathy.

About 6 months ago, I started #typing #qwerty with the fingers in the proper positions rather than the left hand shifted one over (#WASD) or crossing rows.

I felt stuck at ~70-80% for quite some time but I noticed that I'm very quick at typing in natural languages again just now; as quick as I remember being before or perhaps even better.

Though I did also change my layout to #neoqwerty (qwerty but with neo layers) at the same time and started using layer-activated #HomeRowMods after #MRMCD25.

Update on using the Workman keyboard layout. Managed to get more used to using it. Still floating around 10-20 wpm. Still struggling to remember the keys due to how used I am in using the QWERTY layout.

I learned about an upcoming smartphone called the Lotus Diplomat from an article on NotebookCheck (HT to Pixy Misa at Ambient Irony).The Lotus Diplomat looks much like my old BlackBerry Classic, right down to the QWERTY keyboard. According to NoteBook Check, it will have a 5.3 inch display with a resolution of 2560×1920 (which is better than my 24-inch monitors…) with OLED and IPS panel options.  “The SoC is expected to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is a high-end chipset that will be paired with 24GB of RAM and 1.5TB of mass storage.” As ana dded bonus, the phone will include an “IR blaster” so it can be used for a TV remote (note that I did not know my BlackBerry phones had that functionality, the more you know…).

I have repeatedly called for the return of QWERTY phones. While I have stated my preference for a QWERTY phone with an e-ink panel running something closer to mainline Linux than Android (or at least something that can be officially supported by LineageOS or better yet GrapheneOS), Lotus Diplomat does look interesting to me on the surface. However, before evaluating whether it may be supported by LineageOS, I agree with Pixy Misa’s assessment of one obvious, still-unstated problem with this device:

Price is not mentioned, and you might be best off not asking.

Pixy Misa

I know not how much the Lotus Diplomat will cost, only that the cost will not be good (I will guess just a touch more than the $109.95 I spent on my refurbished BlackBerry Classic on February 28, 2018).

@gumnos

Yeah, I've done stuff like that before, although I generally find it's easier to use the physically more easily accessible keys more than have fewer-but-harder keystrokes, like

doas apt install ansiweather^[bbbcwpkg

instead of

doas apt install ansiweather^[0wcwpkg

Not a perfect example, though. I also try to avoid hitting the number keys, as that takes more concentration than just mashing bbbbb or Fa;;;;;;

I'll also use A^[ as a "shorthand" for $ at times, just because it's easier to type those two strokes than that one, based on proximity to the home row.

(#QWERTY peasant, of course, lol)

Photo showing the WHY 2025 badge, a Tanmatsu "intergalactic communicator" and Keebdeck Basic, resting on a colourfully striped cushion. All three devices have the same QWERTY keyboard, which is kind of reminiscent of the old BlackBerry phone. The Keepdeck is literally just a USB-C keyboard sandwiched between two green circuit boards. The Tanmatsu and the WHY badge are fully fledged pocket computers with displays and other bits and bobs. The Tanmatsu screen has an almost unreadable ssh session in a poorly chosen combination of green font and Chaos Post background image. The WHY badge is displaying the Neon styled nametag app with a Progress Pride flag and the upside down message "Chat! That's not my tetrapod. It's the spherical republic of Kugelmugel." The Chaos Post logo has googly eyes.

Zinwa Q27 prototype brings classic BlackBerry style to a modern Android phone

The Zinwa Q27 is an upcoming smartphone that’s designed to look like a classic BlackBerry device, complete with a QWERTY keyboard. Made by a small team that got its start by replacing the insides of actual BlackBerry phones, the Q27 is Zinwa’s first phone featuring entirely brand new components: It has an AMOLED display, MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, and Android 16 software.

BlackBerry Bold 9000

Telefonas dienos šviesą išvydo 2008 m. ir iš karto tapo esminiu žingsniu verslo klasės mobiliuosiuose įrenginiuose. Šis modelis apjungė klasikinę QWERTY klaviatūrą su naujoviška technologija – tapo pirmuoju BlackBerry, palaikančiu greitąjį HSDPA (3G) ryšį.

Nors 128 MB RAM ir 624 MHz procesorius šiandien atrodo juokingai, BlackBerry OS optimizacija užtikrino aukščiausią to meto produktyvumą. Fizinė QWERTY klaviatūra, optinis Trackball, mygtukų haptic atsakas, BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) saugumas - visa tai darė telefoną statuso simboliu.

ėl savo nepakeičiamumo verslo komunikacijoje ir nuolatinio el. pašto prieinamumo, BlackBerry buvo pramintas „CrackBerry“, pabrėžiant priklausomybę, kurią jis sukėlė vartotojams.

"The Sholes & Glidden Type Writer ushered in a new era of communication technology. Invented by Christopher Latham Sholes (1819–90) with assistance from Samuel Soulé (1830–75) and Carlos Glidden (1834–77) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it was the first commercially produced typewriter with hinged type-bars and a four-row keyboard. In 1873, the Type Writer introduced “QWERTY,” a keyboard layout named for the first six letters at the top-left row of letter keys. Organized to prevent type-bars from clashing and jamming prototype machines, QWERTY was mechanically suited to the Sholes & Glidden and not necessarily designed for efficient typing. Contemporary computers, tablets, and smart phones share the QWERTY keyboard layout.
