Stopped at Broombridge on the Sligo train and it just struck me how poorly lit many public spaces here are. Not long after 5pm and it doesn’t exactly leave people feeling safe. I was thinking similar about O’Connell Street the other night too. Obviously garish light pollution isn’t desirable but waiting and walking in poorly spaces is off putting for a lot of groups of people

Urban Geometry at Night

The brutalist architecture of Bishop Lucey Park seems to suit black and white night shots. This was only my first time trying to photograph it in such a way but I’ll try again.

A Sunlit Afternoon on the Wall

This is me standing on the old walls of Cork where I took this photo in Bishop Lucey Park yesterday afternoon. The sun had already started to head to the horizon and it wasn’t even 3pm, but it did light up the mural on the wall and placed the ground in front of me in shadow.

For many in Ireland, November is firmly in the winter months of the year. It seems to be a traditional Irish/Celtic thing because Met Éireann uses meteorological seasons which classify September, October and November as autumn.

"Over the last three decades, places and spaces where people come together to participate in activities and engage with those from different backgrounds have been decimated.

“…funding cuts have led to the closure of more than two-thirds of council-run youth centres in England and Wales since 2010.

"Almost 800 libraries were closed during the 2010s, and more continue to disappear each year. Leisure centres are also at risk. A 2023 report by the Local Government Association suggests that 40% of council areas will lose some or all of their leisure centre services in the next two years.

"The undermining of publicly-owned community spaces has been matched in the private sector… …nearly 300 pubs closed across England and Wales in 2024 – an equivalent of six a week”.

Always nice to see nature claiming back a left-hand turn.

Thanks Dublin City Council for these #PublicRealm improvements.

This is an excellent explainer of the phenomenon of #motonormativity - a phrase coined by Professor Ian Walker of Swansea University to describe the unconscious bias we have towards driving and how it impacts on our approach to public policy and public realm design.

Activists exposing unenforced footpath parking for what it is - free parking.

Neither Dublin City Council nor An Garda Síochána are interested in enforcing this kind of behavior so why not just admit that driving a car makes you the dominant species in urban environment at the expense of people who walk, wheel and cycle.

Goodness. Dublin City Council thinks it can prohibit protests in parks. (Don't get me started on "requests" and "refusals" for "protests" taking place, my god.) Though, by all means, if Council officials want every protest to take place on public carriageways, they can work away.

FYI anyone in Dublin 7:

Prussia Street is a no-go area for anyone using a wheelchair, mobility scooter, or similar.

Due to unlawful practices by construction workers, both footpaths are fully obstructed.

Dublin City Council is aware and failing to enforce.

Why are these steps and seating in the at Kent Station, adjacent to Hotel, still closed three years after completion? The steps connect the Lower Glanmire Road to Railway Street, giving access to the bus stops and south entrance to the railway station. The design includes tiered seating, planters and trees, all inaccessible to the public.

Does your city really want to attract and keep families living in your downtown and urban places? REALLY?

Remember, there are 3 KEYS, in THIS ORDER:

1) ensure family-sized housing (2-3+ bedrooms);
2) build local daycare, schools & supports;
3) design the #publicrealm for kids.

Taxis have been evicted from Foster's Place at last!

A phot of Foster's Place, Dublin showing cobbled road surface and large circular planters and no cars! The curved colonnaded wall of the Bank of Ireland is on the right hand side. It is now a pleasant urban square surrounded by very grand architecture.

Boushey Square annoys me every summer. This "public" square is leased by a restaurant that only uses it for dinner service and it remains chained off the rest of the day.

Closed to cars and yet still closed to people. May as well stay parking and through way. #Ottawa #Patio #PrivatePublicSpace #Privatized #PublicRealm #PlacesForProfit

A cobble stone street with road closed barricades. A chain fence encircles an area with tables and an event tent. There are no people present.
