It doesn’t need to be. #CarDependency #Sprawl

Why don’t we see more people cycling in new housing developments?
When we visit new housing estates something is usually missing.RE: https://mastox.eu/@ZackPolanski/116104227806873865
#Greens need to keep up the momentum here, although ( assuming I am looking in the right place as I don't know the North that well, I think its a suburban area between #Manchester and #Stockport ) there may be less #CarDependency (and even for the car enthusiasts, the scene there has a lot of Asian lads which tends to make racism/bigotry unpopular amongst its participants)
Hype for the Future 108D → Modern Suburban Developments in Smaller Communities
Introduction Though suburban sprawl often dominates in the modern outskirts of major and even minor cities, smaller communities, often of fewer than twenty-five thousand (25,000) residents, may have a more comprehensive sidewalk or related infrastructural network, even in the suburban zones. Within such suburban zones, however, the sidewalk network is often identified in the abstract as substandard, as with the sidewalk networks along major highways in modern suburban […]It still amazes me that we’ve basically let ourselves be manipulated into buying, and even defending, that THIS is what “freedom” looks like. Dependency is never freedom. Freedom is having real choices. #cardependency

Sometimes it takes a seizure to learn how your city functions for people outside of cars.
“I thought losing my licence would make me more dependent on others. Instead, it taught me about interdependence. I can drive again now, or opt to walk or bike. But what if I couldn’t? Who would help me up the hill? And, who can I help?”

@jmaris je suis tellement tellement content sue ce post ait été republié ici, je l'avais perdu et il est fabuleux :)
How the age of motoring shaped our modern world - or at least how #CarDependency was baked into the culture of #Birmingham and the #Midlands (particularly as it was like the "Detroit of Britain" back then (to some extent it still is but replacing #cars with #crime and #SocialDeprivation )
I often hear Americans & rich brits justify buying oversized, polluting vehicles by claiming they need them because they live in the "countryside".
I call bullshit, Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to introduce, the Citroen C15⬇

wow, dan denk ik: 'ga toch fietsen!' ;-)
The latest in misguided ways to make kids safer from cars (I think this really is not a joke). Some guy here in Switzerland "invented" a chip for kids to carry that connects to some blinking light when they approach a crossing. The light, which is no legal sign, so does not force the car to stop, then flashes.
How do people come up with stuff like this? I mean if it would at least create a barrier for the car, that would at least start the intervention at the right point.

Flight dependence: Between carbon lock-in and social inequalities in air travel
While there has been a decades-long preference for #car #travel, which has led to #CarDependency among many people, a similar development may be emerging in air travel. The consequences would be dramatic—even more emissions would be locked-in.

Hype for the Future 56L: Car Dependency in Vermont vs. New Hampshire
Introduction While Vermont and New Hampshire are physically neighboring states, the State of Vermont is effectively less car dependent overall thanks to Act 250, even though the provisions have only been stated indirectly. With regards to the State of New Hampshire, on the contrary, more modern car dependency is unfortunately present within the State of New Hampshire, which lacks such strict land use regulations and focuses on environmental impact only in select regions of interest. Vermont […]Obrigado, Filipe Boni, pelo vídeo super informativo e por renovar a vontade de jogar um :molotov: num Renegade.
A slightly better and more balanced article in todays #Essex #Live news site - this time mentioning the risks from /both/ #drugs and #alcohol (doing so also allows the Chief Constable to use the #Colchester #RTC as a warning, apparently its the largest combined loss of life in a #collision in the entire county for some years)
I think the officer is overoptimistic in how much he thinks friends / family would intervene - he's spent most of his early career in MetPol and doesn't appear to have ever served with an RPU (Roads Policing Unit), maybe he's not as aware of the mixed city / urban / rural nature of Essex, limited #PublicTransport outside the cities/towns, and high level of US-inspired #RuggedIndividualism and #CarDependency in this area?

And just like that, Guelph bike lanes will no longer be plowed.
An entire mode of transport has been made less accessible and more dangerous as cyclists will be forced to ride in the middle of the road with limited daylight.
Car-dependent suburban sprawl is the most publicly expensive, publicly subsidized, and publicly consequential form of human habitation in human history. #SuburbanSprawl #CarDependency
One of the most subtly insane aspects of the unrelenting car dependency we’ve deliberately built across North America is the incredible reluctance we have to remove the driving privilege, even from those who clearly are a danger to themselves & others, because “people have to drive.” #CarDependency
Those damn cycleways are such a waste of money...
Oh wait.
This is a motorway built as a private public partnership, with a very poor business case, and which has needed repairs from day 1, but that did make a few people a lot of money.
I guess it's OK then.
