I agree with opposing capture. But from an perspective, rejecting any effort often just hands all power to the and a few other countries.

How do you rationalize that tradeoff?

Is there a point where some sacrifice is needed so Europe can regain agency, while better / solutions are still being built?

The shutdown ends, but the deeper problem remains: critical public services still run on fragile, aging systems that cannot pause for politics. Responsible modernization means resilient, transparent infrastructure built to protect people, not just budgets. How do we bring open, ethical, well-governed AI into government without repeating past mistakes?

I’m looking for some accounts on certain subjects, who/what would you recommend?

- #sociology (macro, urban, digital, antiracist criminology, cultural, transformative)
- #PublicInterestTech (inequality, advocacy, ethical/responsible tech)
- #sts (sociology, technology, race, policy)
- #police (technology, surveillance, segregation in the US)
- advocacy groups in the US that focus on any of the above
- other things you think I might like!

so glad to see this: the south african govt has set up a digital services team. they are talking about focusing on service design, not infrastructure (one of my main complaints about digital public infra is that people get lost in the 'what' of the work rather than the 'who' and 'why')

@Ashedryden I’ve been working on #PublicInterestTech through my work on @civicband since 2022, but I’ve never managed to make it a paying job

I wish I could! But my actual paying jobs have all been in Silicon Valley.

Europe has a unicorn obsession, and frankly it needs to stop. 🦄

The EU is pouring €43 billion through the CHIPS act into creating "European champions," but we're missing the bigger picture: why are we treating essential tech infrastructure as private property instead of public commons?

We need a different approach. One that serves public benefit over private extraction. Read my thoughts here: tarakiyee.com/the-hardware-inn

“technology for public good” is fundamentally incompatible with using technologies that are anti-labor, anti-environment, and increase dependence on big tech. If you are trying to figure out how to use OpenAI or Grok for public benefit, turn the computer off and go outside

🔹 What could public interest social media look like? 🔹

We explored this question at a workshop hosted by the @Digital Public Goods Alliance at the @Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Oslo.

Mainstream platforms' algorithms amplify polarization to maximize attention and screen time. In, platforms like ours are built around topics – not personalities.

Big thanks to everyone for the rich exchange @bolajiayodeji @robin (more tags in the comments)!!

🌏 45+ countries assembled for 1 shared mission: Open source at United Nations 🇺🇳 HQ. Last week at the UN Open Source Week 2025, I witnessed something truly powerful.

Over the span of a week, the event hosted an Edit-a-thon, Hackathon, and Maintain-a-thon, focusing on essential documentation, building solutions to global challenges, and fostering sustainable OSS stewardship.

What made the event truly special for me as a researcher and OSS advocate was its participatory spirit. It wasn’t just about listening to talks, everyone engaged deeply in breakout sessions as contributors, collaborators, and community members. I had rich, meaningful conversations with people from Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs), industry leaders, government agencies, NGOs, OSS consulting firms, journalism, academia, and student groups. Each brought a unique lens to what open source means in their context, and how it can drive local and global impact.

For me, it was a week of shared learning, building relationships, and reflecting on how open source is not just about code, but community, inclusion, and collective action.

A massive shout-out to the organizing team for executing such a seamless, inclusive, and impactful event. Thank you for making it a grand success! Omar Mohsine Mithusha Kajendran Mélina Emdadi and many others
