#OpenStep

A fascinating look back at 1994: Bud Tribble explaining the pivotal alliance between NeXT and Sun Microsystems.

It’s incredible to read how OpenStep was pitched as the "mature" object-oriented solution back then—laying the groundwork for the architecture we still use today in macOS. Real engineering history.

Installing #OpenStep or #Rhapsody for x86 includes „You need a shittier #SCSI host adapter“, two bad floppy drives and a Kernel Panic 🙄

It was easier when I just had a weak AHA-2940 and a Sym53C810 instead of that pile of fancy UltraWide stuff. #scsinightmare

This is obviously a longshot, but: I’m trying to boot OpenStep on a SPARCstation 20. I have the optical media. I can “boot cdrom” and get the installer going, but then I get:

Loading OPENSTEP

Reading OPENSTEP configuration
Starting OPENSTEP
Level 15 interrupt

…and I’m back at the “ok” prompt. Anyone know what a “level 15 interrupt” is?

[Edit: it seems to be a broad hardware failure error, and the current suspect is ram; see replies.]

#Q: Why is #GNUStep stuck looking like 1990s #OpenStep?

Wow, sold for approx $1000. This is a desirable item. #RetroTech #OpenStep

If anyone wants a complete #RetroTech NeXTSTATION to run #OpenStep on, this Yahoo auction looks like an excellent chance. It even has the original box and original cables with little NeXT logos on them!! 😍

I wonder if #OPENSTEP will run directly on a Radxa X4 (i.e. without emulation). Since it is an #x86 #SBC that also supports legacy USB, it should work, right?

@jeff What a cool demonstration! I wish more old #OpenStep software would become open source so it could continue to live as #GNUstep apps …

I admit I don’t personally use windowmaker because I use a Mac. But it’s important to remember the reason NeXTStep changed to OpenStep is because the AppKit and Foundation API was meant to be open. The idea being if there was an a different implementation that had the same API the apps would “just work”.

That’s what WMLive is. It’s a GNUStep open source reimplementation of the OpenStep API and it “just works”

In fact someone from the community ported MathEdit for #OpenStep to GNUStep and you can see how tiny the pull request is. It “just works”

So please support and boost!

I'm considering trying out a #RadxaX4 for my #NeXTcube mini for a native #OPENSTEP 4.2 installation. Since it's #x86 #Intel hardware (N100), that should be possible, right? 🤔

If you were wondering why I let my #iMacG4 build git for 20 hours, I will tell you the real reason. Not only am I able to pull/commit/push MathEdit for #OpenStep, but the real reason is so I can pull/commit/push my new website which I am building with iWeb.

My current website is built by hand in bootstrap and because of that I hate working on it. But now I can build it in iWeb and push it straight to a live environment.

Here is the "Hello World" page I just made in iWeb: staging.jeffburg.com/

Here is the commit from the iMac: github.com/jeffreybergier/www-

And who knew that the trunk in an original Mini Cooper was the perfect size to fit 2 NeXT Cubes??? 🤣

Sorry in advance for blurry photos, but digital cameras sucked back then.

I was going through old photos to find pictures of my old tech. I want to make a long blog post about this, but it will take a while. So for now I will share some highlights I found of my desk I had in college. It has:

- Aluminum 20" iMac with external 24" monitor
- Dell Mini 9 Netbook Snow Leopard Hackintosh
- NeXT Cube

Sorry in advance for blurry photos, but digital cameras sucked back then.

Holy Shit! I had to post today because I just looked at the timestamp for the first commit to MathEdit for #OpenStep and it was exactly 1 year ago today! On this 1 year anniversary for this toy project, I am happy to have completed the final milestone!

This little app which started as a "hello world" calculator app for OpenStep 4.2 from 1996 turned into a fully fledged and useful integrated text editor and calculator that works on every version of Mac OS X and is now its...

🥳On the Mac App Store🎉

apps.apple.com/us/app/mathedit

Its amazing to think that an application that uses literally 0 modern features of Objective-C is still allowed to be sold on the Mac App Store. Thats some insane source code stability!

Of course MathEdit is still a free and open source app on Github. But if you want to support its continued development, please buy it on the App Store!💰

github.com/jeffreybergier/Math

There is still so much I want to do like adding unicode and RTF document support. But I am going to use this milestone to pause for a while and work on something modern with Swift, SwiftUI, and the Foundation Models framework.

That is unless I start getting so much money from interested fans 🤪🥰

Thanks so much for following along on this journey!

Haha, there is no way this will be approved the first time.... But I started the process of getting MathEdit for #OpenStep on Mac App Store!
