Fun fact I just discovered: the promo site for Kingdom Hearts is still up on Square Enix's website. You can find it at http://www.square-enix.co.jp/games/ps2/kingdom/

You will need Ruffle extension because it is a Flash site, and it is all in Japanese. But even if you don't know any Japanese, it's still cool to look at. The animation that plays after the intro finishes looks fun, maybe it's time to try recreating yet another flash animation hahaha

Once upon a time, GMail had a functionality called Gmail Goggleswhich was a tool to prevent you from sending emails while drunk .

If you sent a late night email, GMail would ask you to solve some math questions (64 * 34 or similar), which either stumped you because you were drunk, or gave you enough forced slow down to regret your decision to send the email.

So yeah, I’d like that but for […]

TIL (or better remembered) that early web browsers didn’t send the host in the request . Turns out only HTTP/1.1 from 1997 made sending the host mandatory. So there’s quite a gap starting in 1990 where this is either not or inconsistently supported.

This means virtual hosts don’t work. You have to have the default respond at the IP level.

So for example frogfind by @ActionRetro@bigbang.social  won’t work in WorldWideWeb 1.0 ( or Nexus) on the original web NeXTCube. Only fix is a dedicated IP or at least respond in your default entry.

> "It's hard to argue that today's internet isn't more useful, or at least more functional. But the internet used to feel like wandering through a college dorm, knocking on doors and seeing how each person had decorated their room to their individual tastes. You never knew what to expect, who you'd meet, or where you'd end up. It wasn't necessarily "better", but it was weirder, freer and far more personal."

Fun fact about this actually, I had the thought that a person this dedicated would not just have let their site die, so I dug around and found this website that looks to be the same one, and it is still active! The person has been running this site for 27 years!

realising now that one of the reasons the internet felt so different for me in the 2000's was the lack of video content.

I didn't have the bandwidth or internet cap to watch videos a lot, mostly got them from gaming magazine cover discs.

Today on OneTerabyteOfKilobyteAge… ok not really. So a OneTerabyteOfKilobyteAge post today had a mention of a "Cyberfeminist Interfaces" page in the screenshot. So I went to the Internet Archive and found it

Screenshot of "Whitty__'s Cyberfeminism Class Website"

The background is the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel (snow). The header & site menu is elaborate, between sci-fi and art deco, but all in rusty metal. I've seen that style before during that era (the game POD had the "futuristic rusty metal" vibe but maybe not the decorative aspect). The main text content follows:

Cyberfeminist Interfaces
Cyber|faces, Inter|feminist: A weaving of the interface between you|I and its source code.

Everything in this interface is a microcosm of ourselves, our cyberspace, and our universe. The world globes itself in a blanket of code. Captured transparent eyeball, you|I and it. We are subjectified and objectified by ourselves as well as the matrix.

Make it yours. Succumb to the seduction of the circuitry. Trust yourself|it. Let the binary envelop you to swallow you w|hole.

Mission Statement:

This site is a portal, a transparent eyeball from which one can investigate and tease out the subtleties of cyberfeminism. This interface will hopefully help others to understand their own Inter/faces and Interfaces.

This is a topical approach to cyberspace subjectivity, albeit one rife with personal meaning for its creator. The links contained herein are meant to provide stimulation and initiate further questioning for the audience. There are no final answers, only more paths to traverse in search of personal meaning.
