An unexpected surprise to see this pop up in a Nintendo 64 magazine.
A nice 5-page feature on the NeoGeo Pocket Color.

Despite the hardware limitations of the Neo Geo Pocket Color, they managed to make this game look, play and feel like the original Metal Slug on Neo Geo. :neogeo:

I still suspect the Minigun, but I don't have any other JAMMA sources to test. So, to confirm the RetroTINK RGB2COMP is happy, I used a Genesis SCART cable and confirmed it is capable of sending through full color.

Next steps… 🤷‍♂️

I'll definitely try some more electrical diagnosing. I am slightly more capable of following schematics and such, but just barely. Maybe I can see where the blue signal goes missing. Maybe I'll learn enough to use my cheap portable oscilloscope and test some signals.

I could also seek out a local person with another JAMMA-compatible system who is willing to let me either plug in my MV-1C to see it output, or plug in my possibly malfunctioning Super Minigun into their working arcade PCB to see if it displays properly from a different source.

Or I can throw more money at the problem. I could order another Supergun-equivalent to consolize the MV-1C. I could order another arcade system to test as another data point for/against my current Minigun.

Even then, I still have some suspicions about the multi-game cartridge I bought. Once I have a working MV-1C, I may need to fix or order a new game to test it all out.

So, after all that, it seems that my video is missing the blue channel from the RGB assortment. That cross hatch display was supposed to be white. Loading the test system definitely seemed to confirm that issue.

And this is all just the MV-1C itself. My multi-game cartridge doesn't display anything when it's plugged in.

Neo-Geo MVS test screen that should show four color-labeled squares: red, green, blue, and white. In this case, there are red and green squares, a black spot where blue should be, and the white square is yellow.

I suspected my DIY Super Minigun, specifically the surface-mount THS7374 video IC. (It looked like a pin may have been slightly bent, and shorted to another pin.) It sat, not working, until I got a hot air station for a PlayStation 4 HDMI port swap late last year. Hot air was perfect for removing, fixing the pins, and resoldering the IC to make sure it was happy. Magically, I had video from the ~30-year-old board.

(Folks familiar with this screen may already suspect my next issue.)

I built a Super Minigun Advanced from parts to adapt the JAMMA connector to normal TV, ordering boards and parts and hand-soldering it all together. I 3D-printed an enclosure on my old Ender 3 at the time (only bottom half seen here).

I hand-wired and Molex-pinned a power supply for the various JAMMA voltages (+12V, +5V, and -5V).

I bought an NES SCART cable for the Minigun output. (Newer version now uses a Genesis Model 2 SCART cable.)

I bought a RetroTINK RGB2COMP to adapt from RGB SCART to component for home TV input.

Rather than buy actual Neo Geo controllers, I bought a Genesis adapter for the 15-pin ports to use controllers I already have.

And I bought a random multi-game Neo Geo MVS cartridge to play.

After all that, there was no video, and I had no idea where to begin diagnosing beyond verifying some basic voltages.

Back in 2019, I tried to get a start in Neo Geo gaming with an MVS MV-1C arcade PCB. Since it's not a home use console, I also needed a bunch of other items to make it work (consolizing): PSU, JAMMA adapter, video cables and converters, and controller adapters.

Here's an unfinished project thread as I slowly try to get this consolized.
