During a second visit to Okinawa in 2018 we happened upon martial arts demonstrations taking place all along Kokusaidori Street in Naha.

It's the evening, approaching sunset, and we're standing on the main street of a city looking along its length. The street has been closed to traffic and there are people and evenly-spaced palm trees lined along both pavements in front of the buildings set back from them. In the middle of the street a red carpeted area has been set out and there is a group of people, three across, eight deep, with a leader at the head, all wearing karate outfits and in the middle of a synchronised strike pose facing towards us. The sun is out of view at the end of the street where the sky burns bright white with the glare and it casts long shadows of the martial artists along the street performing for the crowds. More karate people can be seen in the distance as there are many demonstrations taking place.

A close-up view of strange souvenirs hanging from a stall on a street. Over half a dozen frog purses are hanging from strings. The frogs are stretched out with back legs hanging down and their front legs almost holding onto the ends of the string. Each frog has a zipper across its torso at the front leg level too and there's the feeling that were the frog alive it could unzip itself for you. The frogs have a sheen to them from the coating used and they're a pale brown colour with mottled markings on their backs.
