Houston 4th Ward AKA Freedman’s Town was essentially bulldozed & paved over between the 1940s & 1970s in order the build I-45 and what is now The Allen Parkway Village. I’m not a blues musician but I was in a punk (ish) type band for a few years and even in the local rock & roll scene being a female/female-aligned musician wasn’t out of the ordinary. Which I think made for an overall better experience for everyone compared to places with more male oriented scenes

The Miller Outdoor Theatre (located in the Museum district downtown) hosts A LOT of free blues and jazz concerts every year- including the annual Juneteenth, Louisiana-in-Texas, Accordion Kings & Queens and Summer Mixtape Festivals

@MatthewTitus88 I went to a k12 in a district that was 85% Hispanic with the rest being mostly Black (Aldine in North Houston), which honestly I think was really helpful b/c I hear so many awful things from people about being POC in white majority schools in the South

That stature of Sam “Lightnin’” Hopkins is located in Crockett, TX (he was born near there) while that Historical Marker is located near Emancipation Park, which is the oldest public park in Houston.
