@unchartedworlds @EricCarroll No, that's right, and it is super cheap.

It's really interesting that #metformin seems to have antiviral effects, given the reduction in viral load reported there. I wonder what other viruses it effects similarly?

I guess there was a study that claimed Metformin wasn’t helpful with covid in people who are not obese. This looks like a good rebuttal with some valid points about why the study wasn’t so good.

Last week, I had another check-up by our company physician.(*)

The _last_ one, three years ago, ended very dramatically - the physician called me the next day and told me that my blood sugar values were so high that I should check in with a clinic _right now_.

I did so, stayed there for two nights(**), got some #insulin injections, got out, had a few further medical checkups, and took #metformin for a year.

I also had a few appointments with a nutritionist who explained a few things to me. I then made a few changes to my diet and my exercise habits.

After that year had passed, my blood sugar levels were low enough that my #diabetes could be considered in full remission, and I stopped taking the pills - although I still check my blood sugar values regularly.

I didn't get my full evaluation yet. However, I did learn that my eyesight is a lot better than three years ago - back then, I was told that I shouldn't drive without glasses (which was easy to do, since I don't drive cars anyway). Now I have full vision again at both long and intermediate ranges, although I need reading glasses on short distances (which I already knew).

So while it's not always possible to control all aspects of one's health, I _am_ pretty glad I managed to control _this_ one.

(*) For the record, I live in a country where it is illegal for my employer to know any medical details about me other than the minimum necessary - such as "This person is sick, and cannot come to work this week". So while this physician was hired by our company to do these (voluntary) checkups, he does maintain patient confidentiality.

(**) Total out-of-pocket costs: €30, plus another €15 for WLAN access.

Don't let the dire-sounding headline confuse you. This all sounds like good news (I've been taking the stuff for about at least eight years now). The stuff still works, and the possible side effects discussed are GOOD and make more sense now.

After 60 Years, Diabetes Drug Found to Unexpectedly Affect The Brain : ScienceAlert sciencealert.com/after-60-year

A double-blind clinical trial of the effect of metformin on exercise response, in 72 adults at risk for diabetes and heart disease, confirmed that metformin counters the beneficial effects of exercise, possibly though its action of blocking mitochondrial activity.

The metformin is the delayed release, and I'm suppose to take it twice a day. I've been taking it when I wake up, and 12 hours later. I don't even know if that's the right way to do it, or if I should be timing it relative to meals.

I guess if I'm getting the shakes, that means the metformin is working?

#diabetes

Took my first dose of metformin a little while ago. Is it normal to get a "head change" from it? I feel a little lightheaded & scatter-brained. But also in a weirdly positive and maybe even perky mood.

"After 60 Years, Diabetes Drug Found to Unexpectedly Impact The Brain

Metformin has been prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes to manage blood sugar for more than 60 years, but scientists haven't been exactly sure how it works. A new study suggests it works directly in the brain, which could lead to new types of treatment."
