In the last week or so, #Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella announced that they were going to pull back from doing new feature work for #Windows for a bit, and focus on bug fixes and other quality-of-life improvements for users and administrators. Windows' already shaky reputation has taken a beating over the last year as it seems that every monthly rollup #patch, and many out-of-band #patches, introduce new problems at the same rate as they fix previous ones.

Is this giving you deja vu? It should. Remember a couple or three years ago, when the same guy announced that Microsoft was going to focus on security? They were in the middle of a long spell of brutal security holes found in all their products. Remember how they told their #engineers "If you have to choose between doing a feature and doing security, choose security"?

Remember how you never heard about that initiative again?

It's the same thing here. #PR garbage in service of a narrative that no, Windows' horrible security, usability, and #stability aren't actually that bad, so that MS can focus on their core competencies of buzzword promotion, stock market analyst manipulation, and monopoly abuse.

Perhaps someone in Microsoft management actually believes these refocusing efforts are genuine - but if you don't change the incentives, they won't actually take hold.

"Rebecca Ingber, a former State Department lawyer, notes that while the designated terrorist organization label as a targeting authority is 'entirely manufactured,' the administration is relying on it to summarily execute people in the boat strikes, making their application of the terrorist label on the domestic front especially concerning. 'Many of us have warned that there seems to be no legal limiting principle to the Administration’s claims of authority to use force and to kill people,' Ingber, now a law professor at Cardozo Law School in New York, told The Intercept. 'This is one of the many reasons it is so important that Congress push back on the President’s claim that he can simply label transporting drugs an armed attack on the United States and then claim the authority to summarily execute people on that basis.' "

"The Department of Justice has removed a study showing that white supremacist and far-right violence “continues to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism” in the United States.

The study, which was conducted by the National Institute of Justice and hosted on a DOJ website was available there at least until September 12, 2025, according to an archive of the page saved by the Wayback Machine. Jason Paladino first reported that the study was removed. 404 Media noticed the removal after it was flagged by Daniel Malmer, a PhD student studying online extremism at UNC-Chapel Hill.

" 'The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs is currently reviewing its websites and materials in accordance with recent Executive Orders and related guidance,' reads a message on the page where the study was formerly hosted. 'During this review, some pages and publications will be unavailable. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.' "

When a fact contradicts the will of fascists and their despotic leaders, that fact is simply deleted, rewritten, or covered up, and there are numerous examples of the fascist US despot Donald Trump doing precisely this. I present here one such example: a research paper showing evidence that immigrants have lower crime rates than the baseline non-immigrant population. This contradicts the Despot’s will that most crime is caused by illegal immigrants, and so the research is erased.

I just read that nps.gov erased Harriet Tubman from a page about the Underground Railroad. I want not only to #archive copies of websites, but to use #cryptography to prove that this was the content fetchable from the real page at a date in the past. #provenance Why aren't there FAQs about how to do this already? I've just seen sciop.net which appears to be using both #BitTorrent and #RDF to advantage; and #ArchiveTeam appears to be doing distributed fetching at scale with their ArchiveWarrior thingy. But how should anyone trust that I don't tamper with the pages I fetch and archive? Or what if I just want free backups, so I pass off my photo archive as part of #memoryhole 'd DEI policies? "Wabanaki Tribal Nations (#Maliseet, #Micmac, #Passamaquoddy, and #Penobscot) and other Tribal Nations in the #NortheastCASC region will face a disproportionate impact from climate change. These impacts will affect resources such as forestry products, fish, game, wild crops, and water that are important to tribal economies and well-being. To combat this, varying levels of tribal community preparedness and the ability to build effective adaptive capacity to extreme events will be crucial for future resiliency efforts. Furthermore, there is a pressing need to work with partners who have a variety of backgrounds to plan, strategize, build and implement resiliency initiatives in tribal communities and identify innovative ways that integrate local knowledge, technology, and science in a manner that traditional and cultural identities are tied.

"Using Indigenous Research Methods, Native American Programs at the University of Maine will align research questions, data collection methods, outputs, and research protocols with Wabanaki people, knowledge, and values to build a regional tribal network for climate change adaptation and create a Wabanaki Climate Adaptation and Adaptive Management Workbook. This project will work with and inform a Regional Climate Change Tribal Network to identify research and output goals and objectives using indigenous values and science related to both the network building and the Workbook.

"The Regional Network will consist of a diverse group of collaborators representing tribal harvesters, tribal environmental staff, intertribal and regional government entities, academic staff and tribal scholars from the University of Maine, and tribal elders and language speakers from each community to integrate a framework that will include indigenous and traditional knowledge, culture, language and history into the adaptation planning process. The primary output of this work, a Climate Adaptation and Adaptive Management Workbook, will identify examples of culturally appropriate adaptative management in responding to climate change, and identify tools for future Wabanaki Tribal leaders and communities to respond to future climate changes."
