Today's birds on campus are decidedly spring-themed.

We have a trio of Pied Currawong fledglings.
A parent Masked Lapwing dutifully sitting on eggs.
A Grey Butcherbird fledgling excitedly calling for food as its parent turns up to feed it.
And not following the theme, a Buff-banded Rail on the edge of the lake.

Campus birds from the past couple of days.

Of the two Masked Lapwing chicks I found a couple of weeks back, it seems only one remains, but it's healthy looking and foraging for itself.

I also came across a couple of disapproving Bush Stone-Curlews, and this morning, a Pacific Black Duck, perched on a rock in the lake, absorbing the morning sun.

Some #UQ #birds from the last week or so.

We have a round borb ( #MaskedLapwing ), a #WhiteFacedHeron , a snoozing #BushStoneCurlew and an #AustralianMagpie

#wildOz #AustralianWildlife #bird

A Masked Lapwing in the early morning, puffed up against the cold. It appears quite round.

It has a white body, brown wings, yellow mask on its face to match its yellow beak and black cap and shawl, as befitting a bird of obvious style.A White-faced Heron, so named, because it has a white face but is otherwise a grey in colour, except its legs which are yellow.A Bush Stone-curlew, basking in the afternoon sun on a cool winter day. Its eye is mostly shut, mostly...An Australian Magpie, the northern variant common in Northern NSW and Queensland. It can be differentiated from its southern cousin by its black back, with only the back of its neck being white.

Our resident Swamp Wallaby was in the front yard this morning :)

Then at work, I saw a Bush Stone-Curlew sunning itself, and a couple of baby Masked Lapwings (probably a day or two old).

You can see why these birds used to be called Spur-winged Plovers. They're actually Masked Lapwings (not plovers at all, although people still call them that colloquially)

More birds encountered today. All were wild, even though I saw three of them at the Bonorong Sanctuary (they had just flown in, presumably because it was a safe place, and there was food).

Forest Raven, Eastern Rosella, Masked Lapwing and earlier this morning at Mt Field, a Little Black Cormorant (one of four or five fishing in a small dam).

An Australian Magpie, and a Masked Lapwing.

An Australian Magpie going for a wander on the lookout for breakfast.
The bird is facing left, and is in profile. It is predominantly black, but with a white/grey beak (except the tip), white nape and back, and white patches on the wings and tail. It has a browny red eye.A Masked Lapwing in the morning sunlight next to a small bush and a tree. The bird has a bright yellow leathery mask between the eyes and draping down on each side of the also yellow beak. Masked Lapwing - Vanellus miles

The Masked Lapwing is sometimes referred to as the Spur-winged Plover because each of its wings is armed with a yellow spur at the โ€˜elbowโ€™ (or carpal joint) โ€” Indigenous people used to say that the birds were carrying yellow spears. Lapwings use these spurs when diving at potential predators or intruders during breeding season, while chicks are running around or when the eggs are just about to hatch. While these attacks are quite unnerving, the birds seldom actually strike their โ€˜victimsโ€™, preferring a close approach to scare them away.

Masked Lapwings are ground-dwelling birds that are closely related to the waders. The Masked Lapwing is mainly white below, with brown wings and back and a black crown. Birds have large yellow wattles covering the face, and are equipped with a thorny spur that projects from the wrist on each wing. The spur is yellow with a black tip. The Masked Lapwing has two subspecies resident in Australia. The southern subspecies has black on the hind neck and sides of breast, and has smaller facial wattles. Northern birds are smaller, without the partial black collar, but have a much larger wattle, which covers most of the side of the face. The sexes are similar in both subspecies, although the male tends to have a larger spur. Young Masked Lapwings are similar to the adult birds, but may have a darker back. The wing spur and facial wattles are either absent or smaller in size. (Text Source: Birdlife Australia)
