The #PleiadesGazetteer has gone from being perpetually in the #mapbox free tier to owing them more than $500/month because of javascript-capable scrapers that request all tiles available to a map. For the first time in ~20 years we may have to pull a basic, read-only user capability behind a login wall. Non-trivial for us and for our users, but this is unsustainable.

OSM and MapBox and DoorDash. I noticed today as I was waiting for lunch to arrive that the DoorDash map had edits on it that I had done via Open Street Maps. DoorDash credits MapBox as their map source. MapBox is rather opaque about where it gets its data from, hidden behind layers and layers of corporate marketing jargon and calls to action.

This week is going to be surreal. On Friday, I will log off of from #mapbox for the last time.

The satellite view of the Reinebringen hike does not give a clear idea of how steep the 2,000 stone steps path built by Nepalese sherpas is.

Switching to 3D is really useful here.

I should mention that here, the map has the relief exaggerated by 30% to better see the volumes, but the relief of the Lofoten mountains is truly impressive in reality.

J'ai ajouté une carte globale à mon site d'activités pour visualiser la localisation de toutes les activités présentées sur le site.

Elle affiche par défaut toutes les activités, avec la carte positionnée pour toutes les voir d'un coup.

Elle est bien sûr navigable, y compris au clavier, et filtrable par type d'activité et période calendaire.

Then there are non-routing uses. Snapchat, #Wandrer, #Strava, Esri maps (used in a lot of GIS products), Facebook (map shown for events, business locations, etc), anything using #MapBox (lots of websites & apps, big & small), Craigslist, Shopify(?), etc all use #OSM in some way or another. So OSM gets lots of mainstream usage through non-obvious ways.

I think it would be very easy for them to send a report, or open an API so I could monitor #mapbox usage and not be surprised with invoices.

I guess that would not help them. But somehow I belive that surprising users with invoices (even small values) cannot be a good thing.

Time to look at using #OSM

I have a very low traffic website that uses #mapbox as its basemap. I figured that the 200k monthly limit on the free tier would be more than enough. Then some bots found the site...

Twice now I've been surprised with a bill (thankfully very low ~U$1.50). I then asked mapbox if they had a way to cap usage or automate the usage report so I could get a heads up before hitting the limit. An API maybe?

Answer: NO. I have to manually check usage stats page regularly.
