Frankrig er på vej til at udstede et forbud mod brug af amerikanske services såsom Google Meet og Microsoft Teams i offentligt regi. I stedet skifter landet over til at bruge Visio, deres egen hjemmedyrkede videokommunikationsplatform.

Selve Visio er en Python/Django-løsning med LiveKit som backend. Hele molevitten er Open Source og du kan selfhoste det via Kubernetes eller Docker.

Zu #Livekit sind wir btw. erst anfang letztes Jahr gewechselt, weil Twilio Video in 2024 - was wir vorher verwendet haben - end-of-life angekündigt hat. Damals habe ich auch einen Vergleich ein paar der möglichen Optionen aufgestellt: https://blog.t1m.me/blog/video-call-clients-and-servers-for-web-apps

Im Prinzip ist diese Komponente aber auch austauschbar!

#Livekit benutzt WebRTC Video calls und der Server sowie Client implementations sind Open-source.
Im Moment verwenden wir auch deren payed hosting service.
Die #Livekit server implementation lässt sich mit etwas aufwand auch selber Hosten,
das anzugehen fehlten uns bisher noch die Resourcen bzw Zeit.

Props to the people working on @matrix and @element for making Element Call.

I deployed the LiveKit backend on my Matrix server which was, frankly, quite tricky.

Once it's set up, though, it works super well. I've been using it to communicate with my wife during a week in Birmingham. It has now been battle-tested in a variety of 3G/4G roaming networks and different hotel and aiport Wi-Fis, all while the server was hosted in a different country.

I whined lately 🙄 about how complex #Matrix infrastructure became after migration to separate #MatrixAuthenticationService and #ElementCall. well… now I have it all: I've configured #MAS with upstream #Keycloak backed with #LDAP db, and deployed #LiveKit (coupled with its JWT auth service). as a result I have now 6 subdomains more than a week ago, which serviced by 5 additional #containers. not so much, though… 🤷 but it was a week of work, and it was real pain in the neck to configure all those services. I mean, think of all inter-services links, all those domains, SSL certificates, config files, containers and grains of information (not always actual or accurate) spread sparsely over all the Internet. and note, folks, I'm an IT professional with years of experience in system administration and #DevOps. 🧐

but nevertheless, it's a win in the end. I guess, it is. all works as intended, I've got enterprize-level services for my personal entertainment and tons of experience and knowledge for my career. but since I know how and why it works, I'm shuddering with horror, 'cos I understand, how fragile it is. 🤪
