Does anyone have any experience with #ElementX and/or #SimpleX as viable alternatives for WhatsApp/Messenger/Signal? Are they any good, particularly for group chats and video calls?
Additionally, several granular privacy features are missing, which is a limitation that should not be overlooked, including hiding your profile pic from certain people etc.
One is also unable to search bridged messengers' contacts, which is a huge limitation implemented brilliantly by Beeper.
I am currently testing Element X iOS and it appears to be functioning well, including with bridges integrating other messengers.
However, the tech-jargon used is difficult to comprehend and may be confusing for users. A more intuitive naming convention, such as calling chats ‘chats’ and groups ‘groups’, would likely facilitate adoption. Instead, the platform uses ‘Rooms’ and ‘Spaces’, which lack clear definitions.

Hallo #wdr, warum muss ich in jeder zweiten #lokalzeit (vermutlich unbezahlte) Werbung für WhatsApp sehen?
Messenger Alternativen
Does anyone know if syanpse still requires a full extra deployment of MAS or if there's any support rolled into synapse yet? I don't want to have to run a whole extra database just to maintain OIDC support when using element-x, when synapse already supported it to begin with. Initially they required sliding sync as well, but they did away with running that as a separate deployment. Having to backup and maintain two databases for one service feels very overkill.
This is all I can find and it's from 2024:

@rckenned #matrixsynapse ie. with #elementx apps or #xmpp with for example #monal app?
If you guys are more into nice modern looking interface and features then probably Matrix but XMPP need much less resources and is still loved by many :)
More from #snikket / #xmpp exploration
Just had an audio and video call working with a family member, which is more than I ever managed with #matrix / #elementx
The final piece of the puzzle is integrating #slidge so that I can keep in contact with the rest of the family from one app, and then it's decommissioning time...
The idea of Matrix as a chat service is nice. But the fact that it keeps going out of sync, and I keep losing messages from other people is just plain annoying. This is worse than IRC net split (at least there was a message when it happened).
#elementxandroid #elementx fails to send bug report.
I don't even...
Another #HowTo, this time how to use #Signal on #Android without giving it broad media permissions.
Signal does not use the 2 possible secure methods of accessint photos that Android offers, and clones #Whatsapp in that regard.
By insisting on needing access to read all your images, while being a complex app connected to the internet, and the only official versions containing proprietary #Google #blobs.

Other messengers like #SimpleX, #Element, #ElementX, #Fluffychat, #Conversations, #Threema and more save themselves the effort and just use the builtin options, improving security by design and unnecessary code bloat.
So, how can I use Signal without trusting it with all my images?
1. Use the "Share" Portal.
That is the obvious one, and a very nice feature on Android. It allows to share any media to an application and giving it access to only that.
This also works across the #WorkProfile or #PrivateSpace and can be used by Apps like #SaveTo to transfer files.
The workflow is often slower than just using the media chooser portal, but it works. It is what I use since years.
2. Android hacks
But this is not all. Setting a profile picture or group profile picture does not work through the share portal. So we use a Feature specific to Androids Sandbox:
- All apps can save files to various default directories like Pictures, Movies, Music, Downloads, Documents; without having read access to it.
- And all apps can access files they themself saved there.
Combining these two features, you can send a picture to Signal and use the "Save locally" button to save it from within the app.
The result is that this picture will be visible in Signals internal gallery and can be selected for profile and group pictures.
Obvious downsides are
- it is a stupid workflow
- it duplicates images that you need to delete manually afterwards
- pictures might be compressed twice, losing quality
But for this very limited purpose, it is kinda fine.
Still, @signalapp please solve this very old issue!
Ugh. According to the link below, @element is planning to start blocking unverified devices as of next April.
This *would* be a good thing given it increases security. The problem is that ElementX still doesn't recognize a bunch of devices as being verified, despite that Element Classic does. (Android and iOS)
Not looking forward to trying to explain this to elderly family members overseas who found it too complicated just to log in to Element without physical in-person assistance...
