My linocut shows three heart cockles (Corculum cardissa) with the words, “You warm the cockles of my heart”. Each 6.5” x 8” print is hand printed on Japanese paper. The cockles are viewed from the side so they look like hearts and have varied patterns in two tints of coral pink (spots, concentric stripes with wavy patterns and splotches around the edge of the heart shape).

My linocut print of the Pigeonhole Principle shows Dirichlet in blue, a bearded man with heavy brow, wearing a suit with arms crossed, looking a bit cross. Behind him is a bank of pigeonholes in a gradient of blue to gold. Each one contains one or two pigeons in black on grey with turquoise and violet markings. The pigeonholes may extend infinitely in all directions - the shelves appear to go on beyond the 4 x 7 array of pigeonholes shown.

Microbiologists had been struggling to make identical geometrical configurations of microbes on multiple plates, until Esther & Joshua successfully implemented their simple solution to replica plating, inspired by the powder puff in her makeup compact & the print shop: pressing a plate of bacterial colonies onto sterile velvet & stamping them onto secondary plates!

For #printerSolstice2526 prompt 2: my #linocut of trailblazing #microbiologist Esther Lederberg (née Zimmer, 1922-2007) who made discoveries fundamental to modern understanding of bacterial gene regulation, recombination & exchange, but her work was both overshadowed by & sometimes misattributed to her male collaborators. Her contributions include the first successful implementation of replica plating (with her 1st husband, Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg) … 🧵

My lino block print shows a portrait of a woman in indigo, Esther Lederberg, with curly short hair in a 1940s hairdo, lab coat with collar and gloves, holding a Petri dish vertically in each hand in front of her. Each Petri dish in bronze has the same pattern of marks. She is surrounded by silvery green E. coli bacteria of exaggerated size, several which are being attacked by bacteriophages. Both lysis (phages reproducing inside cells, then exploding out of cells) and lysogeny (genetic material indicated by gold section of tangle of DNA is quietly integrated into that of the cell). The plasmid shown in some but not all E.coli alludes to the bacterial fertility factor F.

The giant tortoises which thrived on the islands, and the variations in species from island to island were instrumental to his thinking, when he later wrote “On the origin of species” which divulged his understanding of biological evolution.

I like the irreverent image of Darwin on the stately, ancient tortoises, but don’t try this at home kids! Tortoises are not for surfing.
