Does anyone else #LearnArabic?
Also, does anyone know (or know someone who knows) how to make words gender neutral and/or inclusive in Arabic? Is there something like a Gendersternchen, singular they, Spanish elle or similar?
It appears that, much like German and romantic languages, Arabic is a strongly gendered language where you adapt nouns and adjectives (and possibly other words) to someone's gender.
Mission #LearnArabic is progress well. I still haven't learned all the letters yet but I'm starting to get the hang of reading. Reading right to left is completely automatic now. I can't really write much (not sure if full words will at some point be included in the course), but with enough focus, I can read. I still have a hard time with all the similar letters though. Hopefully that will get easier with time.
How goes #LearnArabic you may ask?
I've been practicing plenty and have finally graduated to very simple sentences such as "the garage is big" and "the chicken is cold". No conversational tidbits so far, so my new extended family's garage isn't big, I won't know what to say 🤣
The most challenging part by far is the writing. There are 58 different letters and symbols. Many of them are topologically identical. And many of them have up to 4 variations depending on how they're used. 😭
First derp moment of starting to #LearnArabic on Duolingo last night:
None of these options make sense! What even are these letters?
... ... ...
Oh, of course, Arabic is written right to left! I knew that. 😳
I've been doing much better since.
My brother is getting married next week and with that I will soon have a whole new branch of family who speak Arabic. I've decided I want to #LearnArabic so hopefully I'll be able to communicate with them in Arabic at least a little bit when I meet them at the end of the month. Not much time, I know, but I'm hoping the power of ✨hyperfocus✨ will work in my favor. I'm also not telling anyone in my family so it will be a surprise. 😁
we love to buy unpacked food on local markets. here in morocco they are open till late evening.
until now we are able to ask 'how much' in arabic (bschæl), ask for some fruits (oranges = brzochal, pommegranates = romæn, and eggs = baid) and order two coffee (schusch cahua). they are always delighted and help us to with the pronunciation.
